I have an HP Pavillion 6330, running WinXP Home SP2, 512 meg RAM 60G hard drive. Every so often (30 seconds or so) the monitor flashes bright and then back to normal. I can hear the close window sound when it does this. Thinking the monitor was going, I replaced it and have the same problem. I selected a particular sound to the close window option in the control panel and that is the sound that occurs with the flash. I am using Norton System Works 2006 and run it several times a week, checking for updates daily. I also update Spybot and Ad-Aware weekly, folllowed by a scan. I have closed all open programs showing in the lower right corner, to no avail. I do an Alt-Ctrl-Delete and nothing shows up there. When the computer is not in use, I can hear the sound of it closing window every 30 seconds or so.
Any suggestions?

nozke, thanks for posting your hjt log but your notepad,needs the following since wordwrap is on I think;
- open the document
- click: view
- click off: wordwrap
- close the document

this should get the document to look like the others you see here, for malware infections you need to repost in link below after trying the malware removal steps mentioned there
