Hello,

I think my computer has a virus. My virtual expander won't load on my taskbar and my browser and other programs are taking an extremely long time to load. Also, when I shut the computer down, a box pops up with the message cApp vsmon.exe I tried your cleaning tips and running numerous scans but they didn't detect anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, if I'm running Norton System Works, does that have a firewall because I'm running zonealarm too.

You have two Firewalls installed, ZoneAlarm and Norton Firewall. Having multiple Firewalls will conflict with each other, and running both will not improve your Windows XP security.

Since you have Norton System Works that come with an anti-virus and a Firewall program, go ahead and uninstall zone alarm. Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following: TrueVector/ZoneAlarm. Then reboot your computer.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

You will need to enable hidden files and folders by doing the following:
Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\VirtualExpander.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE <----- see note below on this file:

Note: Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders" to help find the file path of these files location. These files are most likely found in C:\Windows\System32

Reboot your computer to normal windows


Updating Java and Clearing Cache

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
• It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
  Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
• If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
• After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
• Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
• There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
  Downloaded Applications
  Other Files
• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
• This will program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* Kaspersky scan log
* HijackThis log (new)

Also, please let me know how things are running now and if you encountered any problems while you were following the instructions I posted.

Hi Kenny,

Well, I tried your suggestions. It took forever! Anywayz, a couple of things. First, that Kaspersky scan found some Trojans. It looks like they are in my Norton. When I had earlier troubles with my computer, it was suggested that I should reinstall Norton. Well, I ran into some problems and had to go to the Norton website to fix it and I think when I downloaded some stuff from their site, I got the virus. So, I pay for that protection--is there any way I can fix it?

Second, when I tried looking for that VirtualExpander exe. file, it wouldn't let me search. It said it was an invalid file name or something like that. I did get rid of 5 of those ALCXMNTR.exe files.

Third, my virtual expander icon is still missing from the taskbar, and now the extreme graphics icon is missing too. Any other suggestions on how I can get those back?

Fourth, the Norton is taking FOREVER to load at startup and thus is slowing everything else down. I'm assuming it's because of the virus. Should I not enable my Norton at all until I get this problem fixed?

And one more thing. When I rebooted the computer, boxes popped up that said end program explorer.exe and ccAPP. Do these mean anything?

Fourth, the Norton is taking FOREVER to load at startup and thus is slowing everything else down. I'm assuming it's because of the virus. Should I not enable my Norton at all until I get this problem fixed?

Norton has been going south for years. Norton uses a lot of your computer system resources and is probably the reason for your system slowdowns. Norton antivirus and firewall (any virus & firewall program) should be enable at all times for your computer's protection. When Norton comes up for renew, don't purchase it. If Norton keeps causing you all the slowdowns. You might want to remove Norton. There are free AntiVirus programs you can download that uses very little of your system resources:

If you decide to go this route. Please do the following:

Download just one of these free anti-virus programs! Having multiple antivirus softwares installed. This is bad, because they can crash a system and cause serious problems.

Please disconnect from the internet and make sure you are not connected to the Internet (unplug dial-up, DSL, cable, wireless ) Since you are not protected!

Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs. And choose Remove : All Norton Symantec.

Then reboot your computer. Locate the new virus program icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.

Reconnect to the Internet. And then update your NEW antivirus

Third, my virtual expander icon is still missing from the taskbar, and now the extreme graphics icon is missing too. Any other suggestions on how I can get those back?

Sorry I'm not fimiliar with these. I would try going into MSCONFIG. Click start, run, type msconfig and select the start-up tab. And check to see if these are checked.

Your log looks clean, but lets run a few scans to make sure nothing is hiding.


I would like you to generate a "Add/Remove Software list" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

Restart your computer.

* Open Hijackthis, In the lower right corner click the "Config..." (Configuration) button.
* Once in the "Configuration" panel, click "Misc Tools" button.
* Then click the "Open Uninstall Manager..." button.
* The "Add/Remove Programs Manager" panel should appear.
* In this panel click the "Save list" button.
* Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file to its default location.
* Then copy and paste the notepad text that appears in the generated "unistall_list.txt" file in a reply to this post.

Close AVG AntiSpyware, Do Not run a scan just yet

Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG AntiSpyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

• Launch AVG AntiSpyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
• AVG AntiSpyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  Once the scan is complete do the following:
• If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
• Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
• Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your desktop (This is important)
• Close AVG AntiSpyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

Well, I did all the requested actions. I decided to completely uninstall Norton and things seem to be running much faster now. I decided to completely uninstall Norton and things seem to be running much faster now.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

• Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  
• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  
• SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  
• SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  
• IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  
• CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  
• Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  
• Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  
• Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
