Hi there,

I just wanted to ask, say if you put in your html code...

<img src="http://www.any_inter....com/image.jpg" alt="A random image" />

So basically you are grabbing images from different websites and displaying them on your website.

Is this legal? Or is it copywrite?

That's hot-linking and normally unless the site owner gives you permission you should not do it. Is there a law against it? I don't think so, but would you want everyone else stealing your bandwidth?

If you are allowed 1GB of bandwidth a month and your images are being hot-linked you could easily exceed your limit without having any traffic to your site whatsoever.

Again, it isn't illegal but it IS unethical IMHO.

the legalities as a whole are questionable for the following reasons:

1) is the image coppywritten, if so do you have the right to use it
2) bandwidth while not taxable is a resource this could constitute theft
3) civil charges could be levied agains you if the owner of the site purpotes and lost buissness or income.

Generally if its not your picture, you shouldn't be using it without permission.

Loading images off other websites isn't illegal as such, its just considered extremely rude and if you do it, the site you load the pics from can often find your site out and email you about it, or take the issue to your hosting company who could terminate your site altogether.
