My first problem I have is that I'm getting a c0000218 registry file failure on my desktop. My desktop is running windows xp, he. I've looked up the solution online and found a few good sites; however, I'm required to have a Win XP boot disk to fix my registry hives. My Win XP disk was lost in a fire years ago, and I definately don't have enough money to buy another copy (100 bucks at my bx).

I do, however, have a working laptop that has Win XP HE on it. My question for you all is: Can I create my own "boot disk" or some sort of recovery disk that will let me fix my desktop?

Also, any tips on the c0000218 registry file failure deal?

And finally, if I only restore my registry, will my hard drive files be affected (i.e. will all my stuff be there still)?

Lets try a quick and Easy.
Start your computer and start tapping F8 this should give you a menu with
Last known good configuration. Choose this with the arrow keys
Press enter.

Is this a retail install or an OEM install?

Not sure, really. These links tell me to reinstall the registry hives.

Ah, shucks, misread this. I believe it's an OEM.

I know I can't xfer the entire winxp over to my desktop, but could I maybe create a recovery disk so I can fix my registry?

I have read that link before.
I do not know if the boot disk allow recovery console - been to long since I used them.
Xp Bootdisk
When you replace your registry hive your programs will have to be reloaded.
Your data should still be intact.
As that link says you cannot use this on a OEM install.

Ugh, xp did come installed on my desktop as well as my laptop.

Is there any hope, or do I absolutely need to buy a new Winxp package?

Or possibly another solution besides that website?

I'm trying to avoid buying a new winxp package, since doing so would put a serious dent into my finances.

So what change happened Before you started getting this problem?
To be honest I do not know if a system restore will fix this.
Since you have an OEM version
Buying XP won't help unless you do a complete reinstall /reformat as you would be buy a retail and not an oem.
What is the make and model of your computer.

Nothing changed, honestly.

I was deployed for a while and when I came back, it was toasted.

I've got a Sony Viao, PCV-RX725 model. I bought it in 2001, iirc.
