Owner’s original complaint of system not working after installing Symantec Norton Anti-Virus. She did this to clean out system because Norton was warning her of subscription expiration. She noted, during installation it required her uninstall spybot due to a confliction, which she allowed. After she installed Norton she stared having problems with many different programs. Norton’s splash screen will come up then disappear leaving an "unresponsive hole" on the screen. An unresponsive hole is a term I made up to describe this situation: If you open another window then alt tab to desktop you would have a box the size of the Norton splash but with the contents of the prior window that was over it inside the box (This is really hard to describe). Tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del but nothing would happen. Right clicked task bar and clicked Task Manger to find the processes running for Norton. Killed them and the "unresponsive hole" went away. Certain programs would have the "unresponsive hole" problem. Word, and Quicken where some of these other programs. This system would not allow uninstall of Norton successfully. To attempt to remedy these problems I tried several things initially. Used Ad-aware, Spybot, AVG. Updated, ran, and removed what I could to still encounter the same problems.
There is an issue with rebooting; it takes FOR EVER to boot. Always hangs for about 2 minutes with the old wallpaper that isn't up anymore. And for another 2 minutes after the Windows start up toon goes off. After I tried my programs I used a few free registry programs. Then came to Geeks To Go. I tried following your directions on what to do before you post a Hijack This log. Everything went fine till I got to the Panda Software part. All the steps I can follow until after it asks me to install Active X stuff. I'll run the window in Internet Explorer and I'll click the yellow bar to allow the active X control. Then it says are you sure you want to allow this active x control it could contain viruses blah blah, I say yes the window refreshes and then sits there "downloading" the controls for active X but never does. Tried it many times and let it wait for up to 40 minutes with nothing.
When Word does the "Unresponsive hole" I can solve this by using task manger to disable some Norton services. Once I do that Word starts and displays, "The document C:\Documents and Settings\Judy\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot is still infected. Do you want to delete this file?" If you say yes word will start. But this issue repeats each time you start word. Task manger never reports it as not responding, but the window eventually pulls an "unresponsive hole".
Decided to update windows XP. I successfully got a few updates done except for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pak 1. Every time I try to do this update I get a fail. What is left of Norton will not uninstall and I cannot get the install to work with out freezing up at the very last part of install. I'm running out of outs on this one Geeks2Go. Please help.
