I have to log onto their website and manually download the update---then when I run the updater in the program it will recognize the file and update that way.

Unfortunately, right afterwards, it goes grey again saying it needs another priority update.

I can't help you solve the avg problem as I don't use it (as I remember, because it was a pain to update!) but I can point you to an alternative free AV program that's as good if not better on all counts.
It's called 'Avast Home Edition' from: http://www.avast.com...ast_4_home.html

Click on the 'registration' link on the right of the page to enter your email address and they'll send you free serial number to activate it.

Don't forget to uninstall AVG first as running two av programs together is not recommended.
If you don't like avast, you may find re-installing AVG corrects the problem you were having.
