Cant Delete within MS Word 2000

I have a user who is running Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2000. He is unable to use the delete/clear option with in Word. It is available within a simple text document, but not within word. I have uninstalled office completely, and re-installed. Still no luck. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.
