My computer was working fine and fast, then, with no programs being added, started being unable to surf in Internet Explorer (100% CPU usage), and unable to play video using Media Player or Real Player. Microsoft Calander also froze up. I must have restared the computer a hundred times in the past three days trying to fix the bug. I used Spybot, Ad Aware, Microsoft Anti Spyware, Bug Dr Pro, Norton Anti Virus, - always leaving me with the same problem. I am online using Firefox at the moment. Oddly, since Explorer is still my default browser, if I link while in Firefox, Explorer will open perfectly and work speedily. I used System Restore and the problem persisted. Then I disabled System Restore and tried other fixes as recommended on another site. They didn't work and I and lost my System Restore points. I ran Hijack This and will post the Analyzer results below. Please help if you can:

Regarding the above problem...

I re-installed Real Player and made it my default - ALL the problems with Explorer and other programs VANISHED.

I re-started the computer and every problem CAME BACK.

It would also help to find out which process is sucking up CPU time.

You can find this in task manager sorted by CPU time. I have found this helpful when tracking down performance issues that are not spyware / malware related.

My problem causes a multitude of programs to mysteriously max out the CPU...Internet Explorer can do it, or Real Player, or Media Player. None have done this in the past, naturally.

The problem is not hardware - it is some internal setting made during start-up.

When I reloaded Real Player, ALL problems VANISHED. So I set a system rsetore point.

I re-started the computer - ALL problems CAME BACK.

I went back to the "safe" restore point - all problems were there, even though they were absent when I saved the restore point.

ODD FACT - If I launch Internet Explorer by using the icon, I freeze the computer. If, however, I go online via Firefox and click a link - an Explorer window will open (it is still my default) and I'll be able to surf fast and easily in Explorer.
