Hi everone,

I have got a problem that I have been trying to solve for nearly a week now and this is my final resort. I dont like troubling you guys, but this has really got to me.

Well, the story goes like this. One day my brother was offering to buy me RAM so i opened up my computer so we can take a look at the model. When we put it back altogether, the computer wouldnt let me log onto windows.

After fiddling around, we could get in again, but when i logged onto my account, there was no sound! When I try to run volume control it just says: "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to control panel, click printers and other hardware, and then click add hardware."

I did exactly that but the computer did not detect anything new.

For the past few days, ive been searching on the net and found people with similar problems to me. They recommended stuff like installing drivers, turning off and on the "Windows audio" service and I tried, but to no avail.

I checked my device manager and I couldnt see c-media or something i am pretty sure i used to have. I read somewhere that the yellow exclamation mark might be the problem but i couldnt see a yellow exclamation mark anywhere. I have attached the audio driver screenshot to the post.

I tried downloading "C-Media High Definition Audio Driver" from the internet and failed and said: "Device doesnt exist or maybe removed by manually. Please plug in device or reboot and try install again"

What i think seems to be the problem is my sound card. I am pretty sure its integrated or something because I did not see it when i opened my computer. I even tried using Belarc and it says under multimedia "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device." But i am pretty sure I might have knocked it or something... Maybe someone knows a program to detect if the sound card is there?

So anyone have any ideas why my computer is lacking sound? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the drivers you tried to use were the wrong ones
If your sound is integrated, you will need the name/model of your motherboard. (use Belarc or physically look on the motherboard)
Use Google to find the manufacturers home site. eg Asus.
Go onto the site & search for your model of motherboard, & you should be able to find your sound drivers there. (+ any others).

Thanks for the reply. That might just be the problem. I have run belarc but i do not know which is the motherboard.

No, I cannot find your mobo model from that info, download Everest (similar to Belarc but discontinued) from here & try again: http://www.321downlo...resthome220.zip

If you still have no joy, it may be easier to open your case & physically look for its id.

Sorry for the double post but the Elitegroup Computer Systems site does not seem to have audio drivers. Perhaps some familiar person would like to help me find it?

Yeah. The wierd thing is, I downloaded that sound driver and when I tried to install, this is what it says:

Edit: Here might be another clue:

When I go to control panel, and click Sound and Audio Devices Properties, under the Volume tab, it says "No Audio Device", but when I go to the Audio tab, under sound playback and sound recording, the default device is "Modem #2 Line Playback"

hi try this. go to bios and make sure the on board sound is turned on. i had the same problem i had al the drivers. i had no yellow question marks but just no sound. i went to bios and in sound option my AC'97 was turned off. have a look it might sort out your problem

Sorry for my noobishness but how do I go to my BIOS and torn AC'97 on?

Normally the key to press is f2 or del, If you keep tapping these 2 keys as soon as you turn the pc on, then the odds are that it will take you to the bios.

OR

As your pc is first booting, it may display something like Press del to enter setup, this is what you must do. If you do see this screen, you must be quick to press the key, or the pc will begin to boot windows.


The audio options will either be in the 'Advanced' menu or the 'integrated peripherals' menu. The audio can be enabled there.

Dont forget to save the changes as you exit. (press f10 for this option).

Ive tried it and under Integrated Peripherals I changed the last option (that has something to do with audio - the only one i saw in the whole menu) to PCI. Does this mean that my sound card is still functioning?
