I did buy a new hard drive. I am now having issues trying to install XP (via the recovery discs purchased from HP) This install is hanging up and/or having other difficulties. Really frutrasting to have shelled out $$ for a new drive plus the recovery discs and still not be functioning. It seems like I must be doing something wrong. I must have tried to install the thing at least a half dozen times by now.

I currently have the install process at the "finalizing recovery stage." I left it on this morning when I left for work, we'll see where it's at when I get home. OMC said he has seen this last step take DAYS for it to complete. That seems rather bizarre to me but I am a tech neophyte and you folks have far more experience that me. So at least I got it back to that stage and now will wait...and wait. [bleep], it's been 10 days since the thing went down.

Thansk for your reply. All the help from Geeks to Go is much appreciated.

Also, if you look at the registry key for windows' activation you'll see a couple of hexadecimal values, each one corresponds to a certain piece on your computer, this is why if you change the mobo you have to reactivate the OS. This might have something to do although i doubt it. I'll find out.

Well, I woke up this morning to find the "Welcome to Windows" screen. Can't beleive it took 24 hours for it to get through the "Finalizing Recovery" stage. Thanks for the advice to be patient.

So it looks like I should be good to go and start re-installing everything and then see if I can access the old drive with the screwed up partition.

Thanks for all your help.

Mark

Dude, thats a great sign, it will take a long time to log on to the user so again... be patient, once logged on everything should be back to normal, everything is ok.

When this happened to me, i thought i would have to reformat, i had the disks in my hand and the screen changed to welcome so i waited, and learned a lesson :whistling: .

Patience my friend, patience.....
