So I got caught by Spy Sheriff, and I see many others have as well. Here are my symptoms, as I see other people have some of these, but not all:

1. Cannot open Task Manager (says system adminstrator has forbidden me)
2. When I open a browser, home page has changed to a site that is file not found. Sometimes the file not found message is in a foreign language.
3. The browser closes itself after about 20-30 seconds. (this is the worst part, as I now have to write to you from another computer)
4. I hear a low "pop" sound every minute or so, even when I'm not touching anything. It sounds like the sound of when a pop-up comes up. But nothing comes up. It's like a pop up is trying to pop up and I hear the sound, but then nothing happens.
5. I have a red X in the task bar window at the bottom, and when I run my mouse over, it says "Your computer is infected."
6. When I am able to open the browser (before it automatically closes), NONE of the graphics appear on any web page. I get the familiar red x that shows up whenever a graphic does not show up on a web page. Except now, every single graphic on every webpage is the red X.
7. I deleted Spy Sheriff of course, but then Evio caught it and deleted it again. So obviously, it came back somehow after I deleted it.
8. When I re-boot, a small DOS window as soon as my desktop appears. Nothing is in this DOS window, so I just close it each time.

Should I just begin by sending you a Hijack This log?

thanks so much in advance.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new hijack log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpRecovery.dll - {8A5849B5-93F3-429D-FF34-660A2068897C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpRecovery.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Avp monitor] C:\DOCUME~1\LAWCRO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\svchost.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: www.1987324.com

DownLoad http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.zip or
http://www.thespykil...les/killbox.exe

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpRecovery.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysmon.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\LAWCRO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\svchost.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Hi and thanks once again.
My IE Browser opens, but then it automatically closes itself after about 5 or 10 seconds.
Also, still cannot print. Says print service spooler not running, so I cannot re-install or re-connect to my printer.

here's the latest Hijack log:

Also,
None of the graphics within websites appear. So if I go to a web site, all I see is red X's where ever a graphic should be. Then the browsere closes itself after a few seconds

IE Fix - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm - Repair - http://www.theelderg.../repair_ie6.htm

DownLoad EasyCleaner http://www.majorgeek...ownload414.html

Use the clear files and Unnecessary files buttons – I do not recommend
using the Duplicates files button
as many dupes are there on purpose.

Not all files will delete – that is normal.

In the unnecessary button I check the top 4 entries

Ok, so the repairs did not work, as IE kept shutting down after about 10 seconds. I got frustrated and downloaded IE 7, and that works better...just because it stays open. but still NO graphics are appearing in IE 7. Also, I ran service.msc to start the print spooler, but still it tells me spooler is not running. I check on service.msc and it says the spooler IS started. very frustrating.
Here's the latest Hijack log.

Thanks as always for your continued help

Ok, i found how to turn the graphics on. It was a simple thing in IE Tools, where somehow my "show pictures" got changed to "show placeholders"
I got lucky.
