I hope you can help. This started on Nov 12. My computer has been looked at by a computer company and htey can delete what's on there, but it keeps coming back. They suggest to reformat. I downloaded smitfraud and tht didn't work, I went to the beginning and did the ATF cleaner and ewido and the others. I have inlcuded the reports. I did notice ewido said it cleaned the adware, but panda says it is still there. I could not provide the uninstall list as the program would not let me save it. I can tell you that toolbar888 is listed in there and a sentinel driver with no other info that I'm not sure what it is.

It seems you have been able to help a lot of people and I have't heard the word reformat. I want that as a last resort. I have also noticed since yesterday, if I am on IE and select any other icon that IE shuts down. This is my 3rd time trying to get this message to you. I had to open the reports first and then IE. I'd also like to know how to protect myself as I had Norton Internet Security and everything was up to date. Should I upgrade to IE7? Thanks in advance for help.

Shelley

1. Download this file :

http://download.blee...Bs/combofix.exe
http://www.techsuppo...ls/combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJack log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
=========================

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new hijack log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

I ran both programs as suggested. I still have the 888bar in the uninstall list and the computer still runs very slow. I notice it is almost to a crawl if I reboot with my wireless card engaged and getting to IE is next to impossible, but works much better if the card isn't engaged upon rebooting. I also get several LuCallbackproxy.exe in the processes list I didn't notice before and a run drvcux.dll error upon rebooting. I think that's part of the virus. Thanks again. Here are the reports:

Here's the first part of your suggestions. I noticed after running vundo and rebooting, it rebooted fairly quickly even with the wireless card engaged. And when I looked for bar888 it looks like it finally uninstalled (hopefully permanently), however, I still have trouble with IE shutting down when I start anything else. I have to open the reports first before IE. Will work on the second part now.

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

DownLoad http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.zip or
http://www.thespykil...les/killbox.exe

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jirinhwk.dll

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Will this also solve the problem of IE closing everytime I move the mouse? That's almost as irritating as the malware.

Ok, my computer is back up to speed, no locking up, no issues with the wireless card being engaged when I reboot and so far no issue with IE shutting down whenever I move the mouse. Since other than the slowness I can't tell what's happening in the background I ran spybot. That report is below - still some tracking cookies and I told it to quarantine or delete - whatever that program does. Smitfraud C is back in the reg keys, but hasn't come back on the uninstall list. A scan with ani-spyware (ewido) showed one generic adware. I'm happy with the results if that means my computer isn't sending out info. I'll look around the site for suggestions on trying to avoid this again unless you have some specifics. Apparently NIS wasn't enough. I really appreciate all the help! Is there anything else I should do? What about the cookies and smitfraud?

SpyBot has had a false positive on Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888:

Update your definitions and see if it goes away

log is fine

Turn off restore points, boot, turn them back on – here’s how

I ran spybot again and no further errors. Thanks so much, it is really appreciated! I just hope this doesn't happen again. I had Norton Internet Sec, but I guess it wasn't enough. At least if there is a next time, I know where to go.
