Hello,

Just recently, I installed MSG Plus, w/out the sponsor, and somehow, got "elite bar". Hours after installation, pop ups were flooding in, by the time I finish the message, I expect 17 pop ups to be on my task bar. Anyways, I had tried spy bot and adaware, but there was no help from them. I am backing up files for a reformat (a little drastic, but these pop ups are really killing me) and I really would like to know how to avoid reformatting. I use mozilla firefox, but the adware bypassed my firefox browser, and hit my internet explorer. Now, all these pop ups are from the ie explorer. Here is my hijackthis log.

We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this, right-click on the icon in the quick launch toolbar at the bottom on the screen, then select "Exit".

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's done:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update"

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the update".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Click "Fix ->"

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Hello,

Unfortunately, I need help finding the plugin directory of Mozilla's netscape based, plugins folder. It wouldn't allow me to install the plugin into the "netscape" folder since that didn't exist. I tried installing it into the mozilla directory, the plugin directory inside mozilla, and none of those work. Can you please help me out?

I don't use mozilla or netscape. Try using Internet Explorer....so long as your not surfing unneedlessly you should be fine for this fix.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.


1. Make sure you have the latest version and updates for Spybot.
a. Run the program, update the definitions file, click ‘Immunize’ and run a scan. Fix all the entries, which are indicated in RED.

2. Please Download Ad-aware SE from if you don't already have it: http://www.majorgeek...ownload506.html

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

• Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
  • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
  • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
    • "Automatically save logfile"
    • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
    • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
  • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
  • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
  • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
  • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
  • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
  • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
  • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
  • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
  • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
  • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
  • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol) and select the following:
    • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
    • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
    • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
  • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
    • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
    • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
    • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
    • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
  • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
  • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
  • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
  • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
• Close all programs except ad-aware.
• Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
• Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
• After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.

3. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ and install it. Do not run it yet.

4. Download EliteBar Removal Tool http://www.simplytec...RemoverV11B.zip Do not run it yet, it must be run in Safe Mode.

5. Run an online scan at Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com or RAV Antivirus http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan
Please select the “autoclean” option when using Trend Micro.

6. Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

7. Extract the EliteBar Removal Tool zip file into the suggested folder and run the file ETRemoverV11B.exe. Click "Kill Elite Toobar" button.

8. Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:
a. EliteBar - If present

9. Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Another clue. I just found out that the process that keeps on wanting to run is eliteifc32, found in sys32 in safe mode. I need instructions. I don't want to "cut the wrong wire".

With some guts, I went to safe mode, and cut and pasted the files into a zip, and searched up all the other files which looked like they had to do with elite (ie eliteifc.aw03fw-j39tagj.pf) and shoved them in the zip. I destroyed the copies in the original areas. As i restarted, scotty didnt blow the whistle, but i found etbrun, killed it, and it stayed dead.

Hello bluewaker,

If you feel your computer is running fine without those zipped up files you may delete them, on the other hand it might be wise to keep them zipped up for say a week and see how your computer performs. Those files certainly were a part of EliteBar....it is up to you to keep or delete. Did you also zip up canada.exe and delete the original?

Let's continue on with the fix...

We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this, right-click on the icon in the quick launch toolbar at the bottom on the screen, then select "Exit".

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:


O2 - BHO: (no name) - {ED103D9F-3070-4580-AB1E-E5C179C1AE41} - (no file)


Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer.

Post back a new log, report any problems and let me know how everything goes.

IMPORTANT! PLEASE do not restart your computer unless asked, restarting can reinfect your computer resulting in us starting the cleaning up process all over!
