my computer broke 1 week ago, it said that there was the file boot.(something) was invalid and then said that dat.dll was missing or corupt, my mom took it to her friend and he fixed it. he replaced our hard drive( we needed to get a new one because we receive another error mesage saying our PRIMARY hard drive is broken and a failure will happen) he installed windows onto the hard drive and then gave the computer back to us.

i was just installing some programs ( flash , dreamweaver, msn , antivir, photoshop, fire fox) but when i was on msn with my friend, IE sudenly opened then closed , again again and again. too fast for myself to do anything.
So i restarted my computer from the task manerger (ctr+alt+delete) when i turned the computer back on i got a message saying the file hal.dll is missing or corupt and to re-install that file.

what should i do?
i lost my XP cd years ago , all i can find are my recovery disks. i have nothing inportant on the computer because the guy JUST fixed it( he backed up my old files)

and help?

There are a bunch of websites on the hal.dll problem. Heres some ideas for fixes.

Heres microsoft's in-place upgrade fix.

Many HAL errors are really ACPI errors, so turning ACPI "off" can usually fix this.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314830

I was getting ACPI errors when i was installing XP on old H-P vectra computers( pentium 650 to 1 gig).
I hope this helps your problem.
