backup not working

hello i am trying to backup some files to a dvd using windows backup and it comes up with :-the backup file name could not be used
d:\john backup.bkf
please ensure it is a valid path and you have sufficient access
any ideas please or could you recommend a free backup program,i was using nero but now it freezes on about 71% and will go no further.
