[Aquabat64x]

Trying to narrow down a problem that recently popped up with windows
At random my computer will restart and reboot with no warning whatsoever.
When it checks the disk I get messages like "first allocation unit invalid (filepath) entry will be truncated"
and also says come files are cross-linked and resolves it by copying (or something like that).

I've tried some things I found on these boards. I have uncheck the "automatic restart" in the start up & recovery settings, I've defragmented many times (and it still says it fragmented), I've run Spybot and AVG (but usually they are never able to finish cuz the computer restarts). Tried to recover to a previous date before it started doing this, but after it goes through the process it it said it couldn't.

Can't tell if its a hardware, software or power problem, so what am I missing?

if you haven't mentioned it yet:
- what model of computer
- what os, XPpro or home
- how old is it

ok, we are norrowing down the problem here
are you getting a bsod(blue screen of death message), usually a bunch of zero's followed by x followed by the number
also,


- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
(runbox window appears)
- paste this in slot: eventvwr.exe
- press: enter
(event viewer window appears)
- click: aplications
- any clues there

I'm sorry, just frustrated a bit with it

ok here it goes

pentium 3 1.0 Ghz
512 ram
Windows XP pro
6 years old

No BSOD, it just reboots itself. like I said, I have disabled the "auto restart" feature...but it still happens

well at work right now...what kinda clues would I be looking for?

np, one more thing to do plz

turn off auto reboot:


- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r button
(runbox window appears)
- paste this in slot: sysdm.cpl @0,3
- press: enter
- find in blue: startup and recovery
( just above the line: system startup, system failure, and debugging infomation)
- click button: settings
- unclick box: automatically restart
- close and turn off computer

btw, the above will probably force the comp to come up with a bsod, I feel like it is temprature but let's see what gives

thats just it...I have done that...auot reboot is turned off and it still happens with no BSOD

temp? I dunno I thought that too...check all fans...they are working fine.
have the side of the computer off so it can ventilate too.

well there are three ways to look at this problem, hardware of which overheating could well be a factor, malware of which you can post in the malware removal section here, or it could hopefully be a system glitch where a spring clean might unclog it


questions:
- if you go into taskmgr, is there a process that is hogging things
- in taskmgr under performance is how is the cpu usage going,
also if you reboot into safemode leaving the computer alone for an hour or two does it still reboot itself(meaning that since you have done nothing and no programs are running too, it is hardware, faulty ram, overheating or the like)

anyway, here is a spring clean program

Time to use your "runbox" to clean your computer,
(all these steps are done with the run box then)

deleting the prefetch files
-----------------------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: prefetch
- press: enter
(the prefetch folder opens)
- press: ctrl + a
(select all is the same)
- press: shift + del
(deletes without prompt)

disc clean up
---------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons:winkey + r
- paste: cleanmgr.exe
- choose drive(normally C: )
- press: enter
(this process can take a long time)

checkdisk
------------
runbox command
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: chkdsk /f /r
- press: enter
( black window appears)
- press: Y button
- press: enter
- reboot the comp
(this process is the longest, worse the screen may be
lost before hours later the computer arrives at the welcome screen)

disc defragmenter
----------------------
runbox command
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: dfrg.msc
- press enter
(this process can take a long time)

deleting internet cookies, files and history
-------------------------------------------------
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: inetcpl.cpl
- press: enter
- click: delete cookies
- click: delete file
- click: clear history

disable unwanted startups
------------------------------
runbox command
- press: winkey + r
- paste: msconfig
- press: enter
- click tab: start ups
- keep: the AV and firewall entriies enabled,
- disable: 100% unused or unneeded entries

IF it is hardware...is there some kinda program to test the hardware? To see what is overheating or shorting out?

Download and install Sandra Lite (it's free). Run it and press Hardare > mainboard. Look there for cpu and motherboard temperature. The software has several benchmark tests with which you can test the menory, hard disk and so on. Please remember that benchmarking can permanently fail a component if it is already in bad shape.
