My friend just installed a new OS on a computer, it wouldnt take anything else but 98.. so he had to put it on. The desktop worked fine at his house but now at my house when I start up it does this:

Microsoft Windows Start Up Menu
-------------------------------------

1.Normal
2.Logged (\bootlog.txt)
3.Safe Mode
4.Step-by-Step Configuration
5.Command Prompt Only
6.Safe mode command prompt

Enter a choice: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Warning: Windows did not finish loading on the previous attempt. Choose safe mode, to start windows with a minimal set of drivers.

Now I tried all of these, and they all gave me some kind of different error and I have to restart/shut down. What is the problem?

Hi kws_divine...

Try this:

Boot to "Command prompt only" and type c:windows\command\scanreg /restore and press "enter".

You should be presented with a window containing a list of 5 files...use the arrow key to select the second one down in the list and press "Enter". This will restore a previously saved copy of the registry.

Does the machine then boot to windows?

See if it will start in Safe Mode. Start your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the "Windows 98 Startup" menu appears, and then choose Safe Mode.

Let us know if it starts in Safe Mode and if it shuts down properly from Safe Mode.

I think there are more problems with the machine than we know about at present. Do you have the Win98 installation cd?

I had a cousin do it for me so no. I think I still have the Windows ME disks laying around here though but Im not sure if it will take that. When my cousin tried to do it, he said it wouldnt accept anything else except Windows 98.

minimium specs are this

32MB RAM
I think 166mhz processor
like 4 or more gigs of space

You should run OK if you have anything above.

Why not post the specs too see what you got IF Possible?

I googled "VFAT" and got a KB article from MS.
I do not know how comfortable you are with what is in the article. Maybe someone else has a better way to do whats there.
It involves going to the prompt and text editors.

Here is the link.KB 139063
