Computer is running slow

Over the past 2 weeks my computer is running extremely slow. I've run several spy-ware programs (Ad-aware SE, Spybot search and destroy and Spyware Blaster) and they haven't found anything unusual. I also downloaded CCleaner (a registry cleaner) and it found some items/problems in my registry so I let the program fix them - still no help. I also ran anti-virus (Trend Micro's Internet Security and HouseCall) which found nothing. I also defragmented and ran error check and disk cleanup on my "C" drive. I can't think of anything else to do to get my computer back up to speed.

I'm running the following:
Windows XP (latest update)
AMD Athlon Processor
IE7

I'm not sure if there are programs running in the background that are slowing me down. I'm somewhat of a novice with computers so maybe I'm overlooking something (trojan, virus, registry problem etc.). It seems as if the hard drive is always processing something which it never seemed to do before this problem started (I assume the previous sentence because the hard drive light almost constantly flickers while the computer is running)

Please help, this turtles pace is killing me.

Thank you

Below is my HJT log file:

Hello cvrband and welcome to Geeks to Go

Apologies for your wait, malware has been really busy lately

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

You have a mixture of malware. Let’s see what we can do.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
AVG AntiSpyware
combofix.exe
Hoster

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Go to Start > Run and type or copy & paste this into the Run box:

sc delete FreezeScreenSaver

Hit ENTER

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

FreezeScreenSaver

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

FreezeScreenSaver

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please install, and update AVG Anti Spyware
  • Load AVGas and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.

  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

  • Please select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.

  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".

  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Deselect "Only if threats were found"
    • Close AVGas. Do not run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

  • In Safe Mode, load AVGas and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.

  • AVGas will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVGas will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).

  • Please ensure you post that log in your reply.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

O23 - Service: FreezeScreenSaver - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\FreezeScreenSaver.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into normal mode.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select Delete on Reboot
  • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\FreezeScreenSaver.exe
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the Windows tab, and under the heading of Applications, Utilities uncheck AVGas Anti-Spyware then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (3 logs in total please).

Hello again

That HJT log is clean. Before giving you final clean up instructions try this.

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up

Reboot

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run defragmenter

Download, install and run Tune Up 2006 Trial It is a 30-day free trial.

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Disable your anti virus programme then click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Check the anti virus programme is running after the reboot.

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Click optimize and improve then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Any better?

Thanks for reviewing my files and getting back to me so quickly. I am currently away from my computer for several days on buisness but will follow your latest advice and repost when I return. Thank you again and talk to you soon.

Not a problem, but please note that my system closes the thread after 10 days of inactivity and sends you a reminder. If that happens you will have to send me a PM.

I followed your advice and it's running a little better, but it still is very slow at startup. It seems as if the hard drive is literally running constantly for the first 15 minutes or so. After that period, it starts to run faster (or closer to normal). What could be running that much if my registry is clean? It also seems that the internet is slow to start also which was never a problem before this happened to the computer (3 weeks ago).

Could there be something else going on here?

Thanks again
John

Well, you do have 29 start ups, I have 4, that could be an area for you to seek better performance. That is probably what takes the time at boot up. Let me know if you wish me to give you my suggestion on your list.

I haven't seen any signs to make me suspect any other infection, but we can check for a rootkit if you wish.

Please download: AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta and save it to your desktop.

Double click the file to install it. Accept the licence and follow the prompts to install and reboot. After rebooting, you should see the icon for AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta on your desktop. Double click it to open the programme. You will see a window with 4 buttons at the bottom of it. Click Search For Rootkits and the programme will start a scan, you will see the progress bar moving from left to right. When the scan is complete, a small window will open alerting you to the result. If anything was found, click Save Result To File and post that in your reply.

If nothing was found, please click the Perform in-depth Search saving anything found to file as before.

Other than that, its a question of getting rid of things you don't want or need. When your HDD reaches 85% full, speed will tale off very quickly.

You can delete some more junk with this.

Please delete your temporary files.

Click on START > RUN > type in cleanmgr and hit ENTER

You will see a window asking you to choose your harddrive (most likely C: Drive)

Click it and Windows will now scan the drive and show you the results

Make sure the following are checked:
    Downloaded Program Files
    Temporary Internet Files and
    Recycle Bin
Compress Old Files (if you want more disk space)

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder). A couple of files may be in memory and will not therefore delete, this is normal.

The AVG Anti-Rootkit found nothing on both scans and I ran the other suggested processes also with success.

Agreed - 29 start up processes is a lot compared to 4. I'm open to suggestions for what I should keep and get rid of (please explain so I have a better understanding of this in the future)

Thanks,
John

Hello again John

These are the entries I would consider as not necessary at start up. This will not harm your PC in any way. The programmes can still be activated in the usual way, it's just means that they will not be loaded at start up in future.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

I removed the suggested items and it hasn't seemed to help - still running really slow for the first 15 minutes or so. What else could it be??? Is this something where I need to wipe the drive clean and start over? I hope not. :whistling:

Here is another HJT log file after removing the items:

Well John, you never can tell. I had a case recently where I had almost the same situation, so as a last resort, I started to uninstall software, reboot and then reinstall it and the firewall was the culprit and I have seen AV programmes cause it also; so your guess is as good as mine. However, you mention it being for the first 15 minutes and I am trying to work out why that could be.

If it had been OK for the first 15 minutes and then slowed down, I would have guessed at a poorly performing CPU fan and the slowdown being down to heat at the CPU, but the other way round doesn't make sense, unless the fan starts slowly and gets quicker. They sometimes do this if the bearing is drying out, normally accompanied by a slight grinding/binding noise at start up.

I guess what we should consider is additions to your PC's programmes just prior to the slowdown. That could be a clue.

I have no reason to suspect any other infection, but to be sure, please do an on line scan.

Please visit Kaspersky using Microsoft Internet Explorer, for an online scan. Please select extended in the scan settings option; you will find it to be the second option from the top. Please post the Kaspersky log in your reply

I was unable to scan my computer. The online scanner popped up another box and asked me to accept the "rules" which I did. It then popped up another box and started to update itself but then wanted me to allow 'ActiveX' download - I allowed that but then it took me back to a file scan screen. It seemed like a big cirlce with no scan.

That's very strange, normally Kaspersky is a breeze. Let's try ActiveScan:

Please download: Panda ActiveScan to your desktop, using Internet Explorer.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province where applicable
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Please post that log in your reply.

Here is the Panda ActiveScan report:

Incident Status Location

Spyware:Cookie/Atwola Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\John and Aimee\Cookies\john_and_aimee@atwola[1].txt
Spyware:Cookie/BurstBeacon Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\John and Aimee\Cookies\john_and_aimee@www.burstbeacon[1].txt

Could this be some sort of power issue? The reason I ask is because all this started happening when my battery backup reported "faulty wiring" in my house. I found the problem in a switch box where a ground wire had become disconnected and fixed it. I even went as far as purchasing a new APC 650V battery backup (it also reported the faulty wiring which led me to believe the original backup was working fine). Could all this have fried my computer somehow? - this confuses me.
