Dear Phil:

I'm hoping we still have remnants and this is not a real problem. Tonight when I got home from work, I had AVGS scan my system, and again it found problems (including Vundo and a BHO issue). Additionally, while AVGS was scanning my system, I got two alerts from PcCillin (see images below). Are these related to the "Juan" issue from our previous thread, or is this new?



Note in this second image, the directory listed in one I created a short while ago, and I was moving all the files and logs we created over the last two days into there since they were at a number of different locations on my machine. It looks like PCCillin found something in the HiJack This directory?

In both cases, PcCillin couldn't seem to do anything. At the end of the AVGS scan, I asked it to delete all the things it found, and then I ran a HiJack This (a fresh download) scan, and a log is below. I'm also appending the AVGS logfile.

I also downloaded VundoFix and ran a scan, and that log is also appended in a follow-up post below.

How do we proceed from here?

Hi Phil:

Forgot to attach the AVGS log in my post above....but here's what I ended up doing. After the original AVGS scan, I asked it to clean the infections. I then went and manually deleted that file that PCCillin found on my E drive.

I then rebooted and ran AVGS yet again. It again found infections, and again I got the same to PcCillin alerts. When AVGS was done, I looked at the results and realized everything it found was in the restore. I went back and re-read our entire previous thread and realized I had missed you point near the end where you recommended turning off System Restore, then rebooting and turning it back on. So I did that.

I then re-ran AVGS once again, and now my system reads clean. A PCCillin manual scan also now shows clean. Spybot S&D also now shows clean.

I ran HiJack This, and the log is below, but I believe it is clean as well. Can you confirm that I am not missing something important?

How did I do?

Hello again Michael

When a PC gets infected, invariably in XP and ME, the restore points also get infected. I always leave this to the last post since I believe it is better to have an infected restore point as opposed to no restore point.

The other thing that happens is that the tools we use in remote cleaning often quarantine or back up removed files. These can simply be deleted quite safely.

Your latest HJT log is clean still.

Thank you very much for the follow up and the explanation. I appreciate it.

On another note....(and maybe this is just me being overly sensitive at this point), I notice that my hard drive is active pretty much constantly (the drive light flashed constantly, about once a second), and I can definitely hear drive activity. Is that normal, and if not, is there a program that I can download to use to see what's causing all that activity? Can this be a result of the viruses/trojans you helped me get rid of.

If you right click (context menu) on a spare part of the task bar at the bottom of your screen, choose Task Manager. A window should open with 5 tabs. You are interested in the Applications, Processes and Performance tabs. Close the ones you see in Applications by using End Task. In the next one Processes, you should be able to see a percentage of cpu use and the memory usage (tip: double click the Image Name box and they will be sorted into alphabetical order). Finally Performance shows a rolling graph of cpu use.

That should help you work out if something is happening that shouldn't be.

I just ran yet another AVG Anti-Spyware (I've been so "freaked out by this whole malware experience), and it found a Zlob incidence. I had AVGS delete it, then I rebooted, and now things show clean.

I then ran Hijack this, and got an error message (see screen shot). After I clicked OK, Hijack This did produce a log.



Is there a reason these things keep coming back like this, even though shortly before, my system flags clean? Your thoughts on the Hijack This errors?

I must admit that if I saw this file in a HJT log, I wouldn't have called it malware, simply because the folder it is in is an extra that can be optionally loaded during installation and contains most of what the XP install CD holds.

C:\i386\ismini.exe

I assume it to be bad because it has been picked up by a scanner, and computers are stupid in that they compare to a list or sometimes really too clever in that they heuristically scan and find something to be bad that isn't. I hope you understand that bit.

Anyway, I still see a clean HJT log and normally when Zlob is about, I see a tell-tale sign, but I think we should scan for it.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder (right click and choose Extract All) and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy & paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programmes (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a programme used to stop system processes. Antivirus programmes cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programmes, therefore they may alert the user.

The tracking cookies can be reduced drastically by installing the MVPS hosts file, but it will not stop all of them. The trouble with blocking ALL of them is that you limit your choice of sites you can get to.

Hello again Michael

You may have a root kit infection, judging by that log.

Please download: RustBfix ...and save it to your desktop.

Double click on rustbfix.exe to run the tool. If a Rustock.b-infection is found, you will shortly be asked to reboot the computer. The reboot will probably take quite a while, and perhaps 2 reboots will be needed. But this will happen automatically. After the reboot 2 logfiles will open (%root%\avenger.txt & %root%\rustbfix\pelog.txt). Post the content of those logs along with a new HijackThis log from normal mode.

Following that, it would be prudent just to run this anyway, in case Zlob is about.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

A. Please open AVG Anti Spyware

• Please install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware
  
• Load AVGas and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  
• After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  
• Please select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  
• Under "Reports"
• Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
• Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
• Close AVGas. Do not run it yet.

B. Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

C. Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, (right click and choose Extract All) then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

D. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

• Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
• Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
• On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
• In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
• On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
• Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
• Click OK.

Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

E. Close ALL open Windows / Programmes / Folders.

• In Safe Mode, load AVGas/Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.
  
• AVGas/Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  
• Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).

Close AVGas/Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.

F. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the Programme and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
