The drive door pops open on boot up with or without a disc. After boot up device manager sees drive but not the disc. To get door to close hold it till it clicks 3 times,lol.

go to the device manager and uninstall the optical drive.....reboot ...let windows "find" the new hardware and it should install the drive and the necessary drivers....

If I do need a new drive,where can I buy one for my Compaq Presario2100?

I'm afraid the only place would be at the manufactures website...
and you might want to be sitting down when they give you the quote.... :whistling:
I would go to the manufactures website first and get all drivers and any updates for the computer first and try them...just to make sure....
