I was recently infected by ZLOB, but believe I have removed all traces, but my two DVD drives are now inacessible. They show up in Device Manager under their correct names, but with an exclamation mark. The properties says that Windows was unable to load the correct drivers.
CleanMyPc Registry cleaner showed an invalid object - cddvdint.dll was not present. Should it be - and is this why my drives are disabled?
I have even physically disconnected the drives, run Windows, then re-connected them - same result.
I tried uninstalling them, then trying an Emergency Repair - but got the BSOD
Can you suggest a cure, please?

(I have tried cddvdint.dll and disabled drives in FAQ search, but got no results)

In the meantime...what anti-malware progs are you running?

Can you boot? from the CD or DVD bays?

Insert original set up CD in drive...
Reboot
F8
Safe Mode with Admin Control
at the prompt...sfc /scannow
reboot...

Any difference?

If not... does a:\ drive still works...

Somehow, from somewhere...download and install AVG and run their "set up boot floppies" function...you will need 6 diskettes. Run...insert each disk as asked.

Later, also download and set up MS's floppie disks from [ditto from above]

Hi, thanks for replying. I run AVG anti-viris, Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, Ewido, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Detector, Spybot and have just run (& then uninstalled) another one whose name I cannot now remember., but with that lot, you would think I should be safe. I can boot from CD at startup,
I have discovered the following link : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270008 which seems to describe my problem exactly, but although I found an Upperfilter relating to CD Roms (Not where MS said it would be) I cannot find a lowerfilter.
I Googled Code 31 and found a lot of relevant posts, but the link that everyone found to be a cure is now dead (Anyway, I run W2K, not XP).
I think that I need to work around this MS report, and am presently uninstalling everything I can find relating to CDs or DVDs.
If that doesn't clear things, I will move on to your suggestions!

You know the old expression...sometimes too much of a good thing will give you diarrhea... Like all those malware progs...SpyBot S/D, and Windows Defender are all you need. And then AVG [free] for AV... I personally don't recommend Norton or McAfee...but do rec. PC-cillin Internet Security [cost] Use only one Firewall...Windows...any others will be both counter productive and cause resouce conflicts... If you are on a router, then it also has a built in firewall...so you don't want too many irons in the fire...Windows will just rebel on you and start to sulk I'd better shut up now, or the malware gang will have me lynched for stepping into their domain

Problem Solved! - The Microsoft link (above) pointed in the wrong direction for the delinquent filters, but Googling "Code 31" threw up an Adobe posting that pointed in the right direction.
Anyway, my drives are back - and I have cleaned up a heck of a lot of junk from my computer in the process!
