Pallet Colors

Just got the computer, making some changes to appearances. Well, when I went to highlight some words in e mails I wanted to send, my color pallets are all little white squares instead of colors ....using both yahoo and excite addys, and I don't know what I did...any ideas on getting them back????
Also, is there a site that explains what all the "appearance" options are? Like with arrows pointing to what an icon button is, or what all the rest of the drop downs are? I can figure out some but not all....thanks a lot.[size=3]
