Hi,

A few weeks ago, the catch that puts my laptop into standby when I close the lid, fell inside my laptop. This made the laptop short out. I left it for a while, and tried to turn it on. It wouldn't start. Then I plugged it into the mains, and it started up without a glitch. So that's the first thing:

Why does it only start up with the adapter plugged in? Why does the battery no longer hold any charge?

The second thing is, recently the laptop has been turning off at random times. I will be working, then all of a sudden, BLAM, down it goes. Rubbish. When I feel the bottom, it is very hot, but I am not running a lot of programs, perhaps uTorrent in the background, and Mozilla on the fore.

I know there are perihperals you can buy to cool down the thing, but I want to try to avoid that, as I am a student and am both tight and poor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom.
