Hello there! I am having problems with booting my desktop computer. Every time I try to restart it, no matter what mode I choose, I recieve a BSoD. This started happening after I had to hold the power button while playing Battlefield 2.

Currently the error on the screen says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I have tried running the renewing console through the boot CD but all it says at the bottom is "76294 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi..." I have tried leaving it like this over night and nothing has happened.

The computer is a few years old and the OS is Windows XP Home Edition.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

can you get in safemode...power down...power up..tap f8 key till your given options...choose safemode...

then go to run copy this and paste chkdsk /f /r click ok window will open at the flashing bar type the letter y then restart and allow this to happen takes bout an hour to two hours

No, I can't get into safe mode. I recieve the BSoD

Okay so it's been close to about 24 hours since I left it off. I booted it up this afternoon and the mode I selected was safe mode. Sadly I received the error again. I tried rebooting again and starting in normal mode and I got the error again. Any suggestions?

Yeah I have my XP CD but when I try to run repair, it takes forever ( I left it over night and nothing happened).

I definitly don't want to reformat though.

Hello stewie167...

Is the cd you have a recovery cd that came with the machine or is it a retail version? If it's a recovery cd, what is the make and model number of your machine? Do both machines (the bad one and the one you're posting from) have floppy drives?

We'll need Recovery Console to do this, so we'll be booting to the cd.

The answers to the above questions will determine how we get about this.

Hello there wannabe1. Thank you for taking the time to help me.

The recovery CD I have came with the machine. It is red and says operating system at the top.

The machine that is broken is a Dell Dimension 4600.

Yes, both machines have a floppy drive but unfortunatley I have no disks and I have never used either of them .. I am actually running out a little later tonight real quick and I'll be able to pick up some at that time.

The Dimension 4600 should have Recovery Console on the cd...it should also have the option for a repair installation which may come in very handy here.

Let's try Recovery Console first. Put the Recovery cd in the cd-rom drive and power the machine OFF. Turn it back ON...it should boot to a screen with a prompt (either at the top or the bottom of the screen) to "Press any key to boot from cd"...when you see this, press the space bar.

You should get to a blue "Welcome to Setup" screen...Press R

Here's where the recovery cd may differ from the usual, so just let me know what you see on the screen and I'll walk you through this.
