Hello there! I am having problems with booting my desktop computer. Every time I try to restart it, no matter what mode I choose, I recieve a BSoD. This started happening after I had to hold the power button while playing Battlefield 2.

Currently the error on the screen says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x00000024 ( 0x00190203, 0x82383C78, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

I have tried running the renewing console through the boot CD but all it says at the bottom is "76294 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi..." I have tried leaving it like this over night and nothing has happened.

The computer is a few years old and the OS is Windows XP Home Edition.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

when you get bsod one after another your other option is let it do the physical memory dump

depending on the size of the dump just let

now it may take couple of hours or it may take 5 hours

so the best thing is to wait till morning

it should be able to start by then........

it didnt have enough resources to close the registry

thats why you ended up with a blue screen of death

try to do the chkdsk /f /r first thing when it starts up and

a sfc /scannow but for scannow have xp cd

powering down the computer that way was not a good thing to do

always try to use the on screen turn off feature not the button on the tower

windows close safer by using the on screen power off or turn off feature

yea just leave it off dont try turning on any more

windows crash with the power button on the tower

you stand a better chance of repairs letting windows finish what it started

i went through quite a few physical memory dumps it cost me my computer but i had

stop error 0X0000007A at the time

so be patient and if you not sure about your computer anymore save important data

Okay so it's been close to about 24 hours since I left it off. I booted it up this afternoon and the mode I selected was safe mode. Sadly I received the error again. I tried rebooting again and starting in normal mode and I got the error again. Any suggestions?

well thats too bad do you have your xp cd so you can do a repair

or can you borrow one from somewhere

a repair wont let you lose data but you will have to update windows

or if you want do a complete reformat the only draw back with that you lose everything

but start clean and fresh

out with old in with new

unless someone here has another idea

Yeah I have my XP CD but when I try to run repair, it takes forever ( I left it over night and nothing happened).

I definitly don't want to reformat though.

Hello stewie167...

Is the cd you have a recovery cd that came with the machine or is it a retail version? If it's a recovery cd, what is the make and model number of your machine? Do both machines (the bad one and the one you're posting from) have floppy drives?

We'll need Recovery Console to do this, so we'll be booting to the cd.

The answers to the above questions will determine how we get about this.

Hello there wannabe1. Thank you for taking the time to help me.

The recovery CD I have came with the machine. It is red and says operating system at the top.

The machine that is broken is a Dell Dimension 4600.

Yes, both machines have a floppy drive but unfortunatley I have no disks and I have never used either of them .. I am actually running out a little later tonight real quick and I'll be able to pick up some at that time.

Again, I really appreciate you helping me. Thank you.

The Dimension 4600 should have Recovery Console on the cd...it should also have the option for a repair installation which may come in very handy here.

Let's try Recovery Console first. Put the Recovery cd in the cd-rom drive and power the machine OFF. Turn it back ON...it should boot to a screen with a prompt (either at the top or the bottom of the screen) to "Press any key to boot from cd"...when you see this, press the space bar.

You should get to a blue "Welcome to Setup" screen...Press R

Here's where the recovery cd may differ from the usual, so just let me know what you see on the screen and I'll walk you through this.
