I accidently downloaded a file and ran it then i started getting popups telling my my system was infected. I ran spy sweeper and it said i had trojan-downoader-zlob.

I quarantined the file, but that didn't seem to help because the same problem kept happening. I couldn't use Internet Explorer cuz it kept redirecting me to another site.

I looked up on this site and saw that other people were having the same problem so I downloaded hijackthis and smitfraud.

I restarted my computer in safe mode and ran smitfraud and it deleted somethings, then i restarted my computer in normal mode and ran it again. Everything was working fine so i thought that i got it, but then I ran spy sweeper a couple days later and it re- appeared.

Then I restarted in safe mode and did the same thing as last time and it keeps popping back up after a couple days of it not being there.

Any suggestions on what to do?? Is it hiding somewhere in my computer?

Here is my hijackthis file after I ran smitfraud this in safemode and restarted my computer.

Thx in advance for any help

Hello again Dirty-Alfonzo.

Let's get a look at what we're dealing with.

Go ahead and get rid of the smitfraud file that you downloaded earlier. As the tool is constantly updated, we want the most current version possible. We'll get it in the directions below.
  • Let's get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
    • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
    • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
    • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
    • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
  • Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.

Logs are looking good, Alfonzo. Everything BitDefender found was either in AVG's vault folder or a temp location. We'll make sure those temp files got deleted while we're at it. Are you having any other problems?
  • I see that you are running two (2) Anti-Virus programs. While, in theory, that may sound like a good thing, it is actually not. Any time you have two AV's both with realtime protection running, you are more apt to have problems with them conflicting with each other and causing all kinds of problems. Please review the AV's listed below and decide which to keep and which to get rid of (or disable the realtime protection feature of one).
    • If you still have subscription time left with Norton's, you may want to keep it and get rid of AVG, for now. If Norton's has expired, AVG is a fine, free, alternative.
    • AVG Free
    • Norton's
  • Delete Files/Folders
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\C1MNKTIZ

  • After that, Reboot.
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.

Hi, the C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\C1MNKTIZ file wasn't present so I didn't delete that file and I also uninstalled Norton.

Here is my new Hijack File:

Also, Norton acted like my firewall too so do you think I should download something like zonealarm for a firewall or does the window firewall work just as good??

You will absolutely need a firewall! The Window's version just isn't enough. Here's a link to ZoneAlarm. It is a very good choice.

Are you having any trouble at this time?

Let me know and we'll see where we stand.

No trouble at all. This is what I do to relax.

Congratulations. Your system is clean of Malware.

Below is my standard closing speech. You may already have some of these programs and/or performed some of these steps. Use what you can and skip the rest.
  • Please re-hide hidden files. (If applicable)
Follow the directions you used earlier to show hidden files and undo the changes you made so that hidden files are actually hidden once again.
  • Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
  • Create New Restore Point and Delete Old Restore Points.
Step #1 - Create a New Restore Point

    Go - Start>Programmes>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore>Create a New Restore point.

Step #2 - Flush All Previous Points

    Go - Start>Programmes>Accessories>System Tools>Disc Cleanup>"More Options" Tab>Remove All But Most Recent Point.
  • Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
    • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
    • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • You should also have a good firewall. Here are 2 free ones available for personal use:
  • You should also have a good Anti-Virus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.
  • To keep your operating system up to date you should do a windows update monthly. Here's the link:
  • And to keep your system clean, run these free malware scanners weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.
  • To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?
