Hotsync hangs erradically on my desktop
I'm using a Belkin serial to USB to convert to connect, my laptop has no problems
It will run longer on some syncs then others.
No matter if I am doing something else on the computer or nothing.
thanks

cuminer – Welcome to Geeks To Go –

HotSync is the process of synchronizing information between your Palm handheld device & your PC. Here is a website that may give you some insight on your problem – http://www.palm.com/...rt/hotsync.html

Visit this – Site – You may be able to explain your situation/problem in better detail –
______________________________________________________________

There are a number of reasons for these hang ups – But, 1st I need your description of –

Hotsync hangs erradically on my desktop

–

Open up Task Manager –

(1) Right Click Mouse on – Empty Area – of – Task Bar – usually at bottom of Screen
(2) Open – Task Manager –
(3) Click on – Processes Tab –
(4) How many Processes are running – Compare this to your Laptop
(5) Now minimize – Task Manager – for now –
(6) Then whenever you run – Hotsync – Open – Task Manager - & observe what processes are active & using significant amount of CPU Resource – during the – Hotsync Session –
(7) Post the – Heavy CPU Usage – during Hanging Time -
______________________________________________________________

I will give you a Troubleshooting utility later – But I need following info on PC – so I can do some research –

(1) Manufacturer Name – Model Number
(2) Type – [Laptop] – Desktop] – Tower
(3) Motherboard – Manufacturer & Model Number
(4) Video Card – Manufacturer & Model Number
(5) How much RAM is installed
(6) Power Supply – Description – Wattage Rating – Manufacturer & Model Number –
(7) Operating System – Version & Service Pack installed
(8) List all USB Ports
(9) List all USB Devices – Include HUBS -
(10) Is this an Upgrade from WIN 9X
(11) What – Anti Virus – is installed
(12) Do you have any Firewall installed
(13) Do You suspect any Virus
(14) How old is Computer
(15) Any Other Upgrades – (Motherboard) – (Video Card) – Power Supply) – (Hard Drives)

Most of this info should be contained in your Manual or other PC Documents and by viewing your – System Information Folder – (See Instructions below)

Instructions to Open – System Information Folder –

(1) Click on – Start Button –
(2) Move Cursor to – Settings -
(3) Highlight – Settings – View Dropdown Menu
(4) Click on – Control Panel – On Dropdown Menu
(5) Open – Administration Tools – Folder –
(6) Open – Computer Management – Folder –
(7) Expand – System Information - Folder – (By clicking on the (+) on Left side of Folder –
(8) Open – System Summary – Folder & wait a few seconds – for Summary to appear –
(9) Copy the info needed & Post – Now you can find more info via following steps
(10) Expand – Hardware Resources Folder –
(11) Open – Conflicts/Sharing Folder – Post results
(12) Open – IRQ Folder – Post results
(13) Expand – Components Folder –
(14) Open – USB Folder – Post Results –
(15) Open – Device Manager – Expand all Folders – Look for any Devices with Yellow
Warning Signs – See what happens when you do a – Hot Sync Session –

I will give you an Utility that will permit – Device Manager – to View USB History –
____________________________________________________________

What Palm Device are you using? You need to get familiar with Opening & using –

(1) Task Manager –
(2) Device Manager –
(3) System Summary –

While performing the – Hotsync Process –

You might need –
(1) Clean Temporary Internet Files on your PC –
(2) Optimize your Hard Drive by – Disk Defragment Utility

How may Anti Virus Applications are you running concurrently – Do you experience any other Hang Time using other applications or just when using the – Hotsync –

I know this is a lot of instructions –
First – I just need more information –
Second I need you to learn more about your PC & problem –
For now, I am just giving you a – Trouble Outline – and how I give instructions – The pace will be slower –

Ok – I received your Reports – Dell uses – Proprietary/Nonstandard – Motherboard Connections – so Everest is not able to analyze or interview your PC in all areas - So few more questions are required -

I'm using a Belkin serial to USB to convert to connect, my laptop has no problems

– I am assuming that your Laptop – does not have any COM Ports – So that is the reason for the – Belkin Converter -

(1) What is Laptop Manufacturer & Model Number – [So I can compare my knowledge base]
(2) Are you using the – Serial to USB Converter – because your Laptop has no COM Ports –
(3) And you are using this same Converter with your Tower –

Now I keep asking what other – Devices – do you have & you keep answering –
[/b]Not in Use during hotsync[/b] – I still need to know what you have -

Well – They are in use – Your Operating System – Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 5.1.2600 (WinXP Retail) – probably came with several – Media – Nifty Programs – that are running all the time & will automatically pop up – And you probably think that this is – Neat – But this is what I think is hanging up your – Hotsync Sessions –
_________________________________________________________________

Do you have a FAX connected to PC – so when a FAX occurs – Your PC or Printer Prints it – Or when you insert a – Memory Device with pictures – Your Photo Program displays a picture album – etc –

Now all these items are looking for – Serial Communication Data – that are sharing – Audio – Video – Serial Data – which are sharing the same – Computer Resources – The Attached Hardware is not the problem – it is the Program & PC Hardware Resources – (Depends how well written) -

Palm makes a statement about having an – Internal Modem – causing conflicts with the – Hotsync – Utility – (Probably not very clearly – depending how much they understand)
_________________________________________________________________

Now, your PC has only – COM 1 Port - configured using IRQ-4 – (Probable source of your Problem) –

I think you need to Configure – Com 2 Port] – using IRQ-3 – in the – BIOS Setup – Under – Integrated Peripherals] – in – Onboard Serial Port 2 – 2F8/IRQ3] Setting – (You will need to consult your – Dell PC Manual – This should free up one bottleneck –

And then you will probably have to direct/redirect your – Hotsync – Serial to USB Converter – Setup to be directed to use/emulate COM Port 2 – (Use your Belkin Manual & Palm Manual) – I am not familiar with these Converters – I will look into them at some time -

Use this Palm website – It should be useful -
http://www.palm.com/...rt/hotsync.html
___________________________________________________________________

If this does not resolve your problem – you may have to –
(1) Identify Program – Using Task Manager –
(2) Suspend Program temporarily during Hotsync Session – The website should help & assist -

Hi Jack,
Sorry late getting back.

Laptop - IBM Thinkpad 42P
Yes, Serial/USB converter
Yes, used on both machines

You are right, I have numerous USB connections
1) a Dell AIO 942 printer connected, yes to a USB port. It is a fax (no phone line), scanner, printer combo.
2) a HP130 photosmart printer connect to another USB port.
3) my flat panel monitor
4) the wireless keyboard/mouse detector

There is also a cable modem box
I will try your suggestions on IRQ's and com ports and report back

cheers
