Hi,

I have posted about this problem once before - about two weeks ago. At the time I was instructed to install the 1a service pack for windows - which I have now done (my old topic closed down - as i was inactive for a while, it is actually my girlfriends machine with the problems).

In short, I am pretty sure im infected by some sort of malware - the computer is in general running 10 times slower than it was before we got the internet hooked up, and also both my browsers - ie and firefox, seem to be infected with a program which started off only loading when i typed in an incorrect web adress but spread the more i used the internet - to the stage where no search engine (google, yahoo etc) would work and no homepages would load without going straoght to the dodgy site in question, strangley if we dont use the computer for around a week, the problems do get better, but quickly return!

Here is my new hijack this log - I had exams last week - hence my inactivity - but am finished at uni for a month so can have a real crack at sorting this problem....

...all help massively appreciated,

Jim

Hello again. You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin, follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer, please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load, this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again. Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{102D9509-8669-4EEF-B4AB-1B43E617935B}: NameServer = 85.255.116.52,85.255.112.106

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.52 85.255.112.106
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.52 85.255.112.106
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.52 85.255.112.106

Exit HijackThis. Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

OK, good. Do another scan for me. Please download SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free version)
  • Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
  • It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
  • Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
    • Close browsers before scanning
    • Scan for tracking cookies
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    • Please leave the others unchecked.
    • Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
  • On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
  • On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
  • Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
  • It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
  • To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
    • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
    • Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
    • Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
  • Click close and close again to exit the program.
  • Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.

1) this problem and
2) protection from future problems

Thanks so much for all the help with the malware...really appreciate it, will try to sort out my own pc soon once i get hooked up to the net and if u manage to sort that out (it is infested) i will defo drop u a donation..

thanks again, jim

Click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so.

In your HijackThis log, all the entries that are prefixed by O4 are the programs that Start when you turn your machine on. If you go here:

http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html

you can check each one individually. Any that have a U or N status then you can decide whether to stop them at Start-up.

To do this, click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.4 - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done. Open the program again, click Mode>Advanced mode>Tools>System Startup and disable the entries you no longer want by clicking the little box so that the checkmark is removed. Do not delete them and don't disable any system start-ups. Reboot. Let me know if this helps.

Not sure if I understand that - did you download a zip file?

Hello again,

With regards to the zip folder I have downloaded it but when I open it it says 'The Compressed (zipped) folder is invalid or corrupted' and if i right-click then try to extract the files, it says 'No files to extract'.

Regarding the speed of the laptop - having done what you said and disabled the startups of some of the (definately) unneeded entries the machine is running slower than ever!!!!

Just downloaded that file myself and extracted it without a hitch - have another go at downloading, maybe it got corrupted.

Regarding the speed of your machine, unless you have got reinfected it isn't malware related. Here's a few more suggestions but if you need further help with this you will have to post a new topic in the proper Operating System Forum.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theelderg...nup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham....rag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.
