I am a complete novice when it comes to matters like this so any help would be greatly appretiated...I believe my sound card or device or the software required to make it work has been deleted and so I cannot play any sound files....i have tried troubleshooting etc as well as downloading updated versions of various programs and what are apparently sound devices but not really knowing what I'm doing I haven't had any success yet. I get this message when I try:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

Web help adds that I've "encountered error message C00D11BA" and that error code 80040256
means that I "Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding."

All this really means very little to me!! Anyadvice etc on what I can do about this would be great!

Take a look in device manager. Start>settings>control panel>system>hardware>device manager. Do you see any yellow ! or ?'s? Look for your soundcard in the list of hardware. select it and hit ''delete''. reboot your machine and let windows find and install the correct driver for the card.
