My brother in law is having problems with his pc. He bought his system new form Dell 2 years ago. Recently, he started receiving an alert that Windows validation could not complete. The activeX control needed to validate will install fine but it appears blocked in IE (icon on status bar shows blocked). I ran several spyware scans (AVG, Adaware & spybot and followed the advice in this forum) but they really did not find much (mostly cookies). He is now having problems accessing any SSL site. IE security options are all set to default recommended for each zone.
He had PC-Cilan AV but it had been expired since August. He just removed it and was going to repurchase online and noticed the SSL problem.
HJT log attached.

All help appreciated greatly!

Sorry I have not replied sooner but I have been sick for a few days. I had just added AWG anti apyware to troubleshoot the issue of SSL & the windows validation problems so that would not be causing the issue. I did have him remove the windows defender as well.
Any ideas as to what is causing SSL & the Windows active x validation to fail?

Thanks

I have no idea what is causing the problems. Is he trying to update windows and is unable to get it done? Have you tried updating to IE7?

Here are the instructions on how to disable windows defender:

We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the changes we need to make.

To disable Real-Time Protection:
  • Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"

  • Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
    • Save it to the desktop.
    • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
    • You will receive a prompt:
[list]Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
[b]*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Also, give me anoyther hijack this log. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Very busy time of year for me. Sorry you were ill. :whistling:

I will try the things you have suggested. The problem he is seeing with windows updates is that he cannot validate windows. It is a valid copy as it is OEM from Dell and he purchased it new. I even tried the alternate validation methods on the MS website, biut those failed. When I ran the validation troubleshooter, all of the steps passed except the last one which was the installation of an Active X control.

I will reply with any news after doing the things you suggested.

Thanks again
