hey i was wonderng if anyone could help me fix a bunch of problems?

i thought i managed my system pretty well, and have a good dozen spyware removers and blockers running, but for some reason, my dell media experience tries to take over my computer and has to be ctrl alt deleted to close. when i tried to play my dvds with windows media player, there is no sound, and in fact all sounds have now been replaced with a beep that doesnt even come thru the speakers. while all this happened, my desktop was also configured to windows classic style and the xp style option isnt there anymore. i have some knowledge of what im doing, but not enough... my msconfig says there is an Access Denied error when i make changes, and that i should log on as an adminisrator, though last i checked i was. and my system32 folder is full of all sorts of junk i don't recognize. there are no restore points i could revert to and i dont entirely feel like reinstalling windows.

any help would be MUUUUCH appreciated

Hello and welcome to Geeks to Go!

In order to get a better idea of whats happening with your computer:
  • Please download the latest version of HiJackThis from either Site 1 or Site 2
  • Copy it into its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do a system scan and save a logfile"
  • When the scan is finished, it will ask you to save the log. Just save it anywhere that you will remember like your desktop.
  • After you save it, the log will open in notepad. In notepad, press Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents in a reply to this post.
  • Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential
  • Don't Fix Anything Yet
Good Luck

Thanks

I guess I should let you know that now my internet doesnt work. It is connected (LAN) and AIM works, but my browser (Firefox) won't find addresses. And, it won't recognize blank cd's or my flash drive either, so I can't even back up files as it is. (I sent this thru AIM to a friend and posted this with his computer). And I restarted the computer and an error came up saying it couldnt fine the file with a name that was a bunch of wingdings I think, and that filename shows up now in my msconfig twice, along with 2 entries for what looks like chinese symbols. Anyway, here's my logfile:

I am very sorry for your wait.

Please re-scan with HiJackThis and place a check next to the following entries.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Hosts File] WindowsHosts.exe

Close all open windows and click fix checked. After that, reboot into safe mode by pressing F8 as your computer boots and select Safe Mode.

Search for and delete the following file.

WindowsHosts.exe

After that, reboot into normal windows.

Your internet should be working. If it is, please run the following scans.

Please run an on-line virus scan at TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After that, please re-scan with HJT and submit a fresh log.
