My computer is running on Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2. There is nothing much installed in my computer. It is relatively empty as there is still 31% free space in my C drive and 98% free space in my D drive.I update and do complete system scan using AVG and AVG anti-spyware regularly.Normally the result is clean with only a few tracking cookies which are cleaned after every time i perform the clean up.There is no virus or other threats found so far by the scans. My computer is still slow, it used to be very fast when we first bought it a few years ago.My computer will hang ocassionally like every minute or so, and i will loose control of my mouse, sometimes the screen black outs and it takes a while for the screen to reappear. When i open internet explorer browsers, the problem gets worse, the computer keeps freezing frequently.

Can anyone help me in this problem. Is there any way to find out what is really causing this problem and to solve it effectively. Is there anything that i can do ?

Thank you in advance.

three possibilities here; untidy system, malware, hardware
and since an untidy system is the easiest of the three.....

Time to use your "runbox" to clean your computer,
(all these steps are done with the run box then)

deleting the prefetch files
-----------------------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: prefetch
- press: enter
(the prefetch folder opens)
- press: ctrl + a
(select all is the same)
- press: shift + del
(deletes without prompt)

disc clean up
---------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons:winkey + r
- paste: cleanmgr.exe
- choose drive(normally C: )
- press: enter
(this process can take a long time)

checkdisk
------------
runbox command
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: chkdsk /f /r
- press: enter
( black window appears)
- press: Y button
- press: enter
- reboot the comp
(this process is the longest, worse the screen may be
lost before hours later the computer arrives at the welcome screen)

disc defragmenter
----------------------
runbox command
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: dfrg.msc
- press enter
(this process can take a long time)

deleting internet cookies, files and history
-------------------------------------------------
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: inetcpl.cpl
- press: enter
- click: delete cookies
- click: delete file
- click: clear history

disable unwanted startups
------------------------------
runbox command
- press: winkey + r
- paste: msconfig
- press: enter
- click tab: start ups
- keep: the AV and firewall entriies enabled,
- disable: 100% unused or unneeded entries
- Unsure about the start up: http://www.bleepingc...r.com/startups/
(IMPORTANT: enable all startups before running the Hijackthis program)

Two suggestions:

Basic Cleanup:

Advanced Windows Care:

They will really help.

Thanks zbd and fleamailman for your advice.I realised that my computer is slightly faster/better after performing the check disk function and disabling unwanted startups suggested by fleamailman.Advanced Windows Care tool and CCleaner tool that i downloaded according to zbd's advice was also helpful. The computer is slightly better now, is there any other thing that i can do to further improve the computer.

Thank you.

anyways, put me on a soapbox and I will probably remind everyone that all harddirves have a lifespan unknown to the user so speed and performance is only half the story since backup is just as important and anything that you feel could be stored elsewhere helps, I myself am not one for a super big harddrive because when something goes wrong it takes hours to scan all the files whereas if your drive is both small and empty'ish....(for my internet my computer is just 6gb but why would I need more anyway) but my external harddrive are 40gb as explained under my avatar, and 80gb and a few USBkeys too, computers are just access I my view

OK, since we can now rule out untidy system, that leaves malware and hardware as options, time to go to our security here, do the steps mentioned there then do the hjt log explained in the link,

http://www.geekstogo..._Log-t2852.html

good luck then
