Read the info on the web site and liked what I read so I tried changing the DNS in the Windows network first and saw no difference... so I changed them in the router and then could get to NO SITE AT ALL. Decided to table this idea until the holidays are over in case I get myself into a real pickle and have to call my server. I'm thinking with people getting new computers for Christmas and signing up for an internet service, the wait time might be a bit more than my patience would handle at this time. I will pursue this idea later.

It sounds like it was a DNS issue on Verizon's part. I worked as a tech for a major online site and we saw all kinds of weird things. What you described sounds like one of two issues: either there was a DNS server with an issue that you had the joy and honor of accessing or there was an issue with the sites being blocked.

The first would be something their techs would be too poorly informed to do anything about if they even had the tools to, which they do not. Did you ever try accessing the site by typing the IP in your browser address bar?

The other option is hard for me to describe so please bear with me. As diverse as the internet seems there are actually only a few companies that control all the connections. Well a few years ago (I apologize if the details are wrong) Time Warner got in a dispute with one of the companies in doing so no Time Warner customer could access anything that was connected to that companies connections and no one who used that company for connections could access Time Warners' customers. While the issue discussed here does not seem like it is that it could be something similar.

You could connect through AOL and the proxies because you are no longer using Verizon's network to make the connection (even though it seems as though you are). That leads me to believe that it is an issue with Verizon and if it was an IP thing that they need to give you a new IP not have you release and renew.

It appears that the newspaper has changed servers ... for whatever reason... not sure if it had anything to do with my situation... perhaps it was discovered that I was not alone.... but no one else had bothered to pursue it and bring it to their attention.

But at least we now know wherein the problem lay....

almost assured to have been helpfull with the sollution...if it was a dns issue (probably was) then by changing servers (and assumed to change hosting companies) they probably got listed on a better DNS server (or at least easier to reach one)

I'm new here and will be on the road in a few days, but I was looking for some help with a problem and found yours. Here's where it becomes interesting! I have been having an intermittent refusal for my browsers to find www.verizon.com or www22.verizon.com or pages derived from these. Upon the few times when I was able to make the connection the appearance of the site change during the process of paying a phone bill and then the site became unusable. Trying to access the site immediately after on any browser gave ".......WOW I just went to FireFox to get the message normally presented and the site (using my bookmark) opened and I was able to pay a bill. I signed out and closed and reopened, ok. Then I tried IE7 and opened the site several times (again just now). The message when it doesn't open is the standard "cannot be found, etc.". I can access the site(s) with my laptop with no problem.
It seems that there is a common thread here, Verizon. Their help has been poor to say the best.
I have tried searching for any related stuff on this machine and have found no items that could, it seems, affect this. There is no host file entry that could do this. AND it doesn't happen consistently!
One last time.......www22.verizon.com/myaccount just opened in IE7 but not in Firefox.

I’ve had a very similar problem which I solved in a different way. As was mentioned by shazmar I also could not access www.nasa.gov or any other NASA site. I use to be able to routinely go to these sites. I noticed that I also could not get to the Space Telescope Science Institute www.stsci.edu or the US Air Force www.af.mil. I had no problem getting to hundreds of other sites but for some strange reason I could not access these. I tried different browsers only to find the same problem. I have verizon DSL with a wireless router. Strange enough I could access these sites with other computers over the wireless network. That would seem to rule out the modem and the ISP. After reading these postings, I tried a few things. Proxify allowed me to get to those sites without a problem. Also, if I tried using ping or tracert I would get an error. But using ping and tracert with the actual IP address for those web sites was successful. Finally all of the discussion about DNS led me to investigate the IP address setting and DNS settings on my computer. Under the Internet Protocol properties, the IP setting was set to obtain an IP address automatically but the DNS setting was FIXED. I decided to change the DNS setting to also to ‘obtain automatically’. That one change fixed the problem.
