xp upgrades caused problems

Okay here is the deal. My mother in law sent here pc to get repaired and she wants to retrieve data from it. it had a bad power supply. now that it was repaired her upgrade disk she purchased says xp is invalid. to supply a genuine copy. it was bought by my brother in law that lives 6 hrs away. any suggestions would be appreciated.oh yeah it was upgraded from either a 98 or 2000.

Use the option to activate by calling Microsoft.. Explain the details and be prepared to provide both the upgrade medium key code and the XP upgrade cd key code..
