My friend's son is away at college, and has brought home his infected portable PC. The machine spawns extra browser windows seemingly at random. I have followed the instructions on the guide page;
AdAware initially found over 400 items, those were all fixed, a subsequent run found 24 items. I can post the log file if necessary (quite a bit larger than HijackThis log file).
Spybot S&D keeps finding the same three items: Two are identified as "Common hijacker" and one is IGetNet. All pertain to hosts file redirection settings. These three items are impervious to attempts to fix, although SS&D says they are fixed; running SS&D immediately again yields the same results! There are sometimes other items found, the usual doubleclick monitoring cookies etc.
CWShredder keeps finding the same three items:
CWS.BootConf
CWS.Svchost32
CWS.Look2Me
They keep regenerating after each run and reboot of CWShredder. Upon rebooting, the machine will almost always run for perhaps a minute, then a brief blue screen of death followed immediately by a autoreboot, and then things seem to be fine again, albeit with the malware back and browser windows spawning etc.
AVG is on and enabled, and catches a few trojans now and then while the machine is running, almost always variants of dropper.small.<yadayada>. Putting them in the vault or deleting them has no effect.
I ran TrendMicro's online scan, and it found three items:
TROJ_PRUTEC.B C:\Windows\system32\pruttct.exe
TROJ_LOWZONES>Bl C:\Windows\sixtypopsix.exe
TROJ_IEZONES.C C:\Install.exe
I used the tool to delete the files, as they showed as NonCleanable.
I then used HijackThis to generate the following log:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
