I had a power outage and didn't turn my computer off. Since then, I haven't been able to open Outlook 2003 SP2. OS is Windows XP SP2. When I click to open Outlook, I get a window that checks for problems - "The data file 'Personal Folders' was not closed properly." Then, Outlook opens up for a second and closes right after that.

I tried repairing it with my original disk. I tried System Restore to an earlier date, but I still can't get into my inbox because the application closes. Any ideas how to fix my problem?

I'd also suggest running SCANPST.EXE to try to recover/repair your PST file. Here's the MS article that details the tool: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287497

I tried the RESTORE SHORTCUTS in Word and tried the SCANPST.EXE, but Outlook still closes after opening for a split second.

Are you getting any errors when Outlook closes, either on screen or in the Event Log? To check the Event Log, go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event View. Look in the Application and System logs for anything happening at the same time Outlook closes. If you have something in the event log, you can copy the error text by clicking the clipboard icon (on the right side of the screen underneath the down arrow).

Are any other programs affected since the power outage?

You could try SFC (System File Checker)
It can fix certain issues in Windows where specific system files get corrupted, deleted, or infected. Basically the System File Protection watches the system files and checks their integrity against it's knowledge of what these files are supposed to look like. Generally if a system file get's "messed with" windows will let you know and give you the option to dissallow the change, sometimes you don't get this option though. The System File Checker is a command line utility that will initiate a scan of all the system files to make sure they are in their original state, present on the system, and or working properly. It's an easy tool to use but the user HAS to have an XP disk for it to work.

Do you have a valid XP cd?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below

Start > Run > cmd then type

sfc /scannow (note the space)

let this run untill you get a message saying it is complete.

SFC - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

Outlook fails to complete in opening. It opens up for about a second, but as soon as I see it try to go to the inbox upon opening, it closes automatically.

No other applications were affected. Although my other computer completely burned out (an older computer). I replaced the burned out power supply, but it burned out my floopy drive (you can smell the burnt board) and probably my motherboard, too - nothing turns on expecpt my new power supply.

I did the SFC using my valid XP CD, but didn't fix my problem. I didn't see any message saying it is complete. I wonder if that's becasue my XP CD is SP 1 and I've updated to SP2.

Thanks for these suggestons, but I still don't know how I can get outlook to stay open. It appears that it tries to setup and read files upon opening, but probably go corrut, and so it closes.

Argh! I wasn't going to post this, but after closing Outlook and later opening it, the application failed again upon trying to open in Personal Folders.

If I can't fix my Outlook, I'm thinking I either reload Office 2003 or just go to 2007. Anyone have thoughts on either?

What is the size of your PST file? Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

One more thing: please check the Event Log for any errors regarding Microsoft Outlook. To get to the Event Viewer, click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. On the left side of the screen are the three categories of events: Application, Security, and System. Click each one and browse the list of events on the right side of the screen. Look for events with a date and time stamp that matches the last time you tried to open Outlook. The ones we'd be most interested in will have show "Warning" or "Error" in the "Type" column. To copy the error message, open the specific event and click the Clipboard icon (on the right side below the down arrow).

1. Event 1000/Source Microsoft Office 11. Do you have SP2 and all critical updates? If not, go to Microsoft's Update site. If this doesn't correct the problem, go to #2.

2. Event 51/Source Disk. Do you have an external hard drive?

3. Test your hard drive (or external drive - depending on answer to #2). Open My Computer, right click over C:\, Properties, Tools, Error Checking/Check Now button. You'll get a blurb that the hard drive can't be check now, and asking if you want to check it at the next restart. Tell it yes. The checkdisk will run when you reboot next, and it will take a little bit of time.

If this doesn't correct the problem, go to #4.

4. Test your RAM. Please download Memtest. Click here for complete instructions for running Memtest. Run it overnight if possible.
