Hi Again,
Ya'll helped before...so here goes again...

Our Feb 2004 Dell Inspiron 8600 runs XP Professional, with SP2. It has been "messed up" for awhile, but barely tolerable. About a week ago, my wife was trying to clean up the system, and she inadvertently deleted a file or registry entry that resulted in Windows not being able to boot up. Of course panic set in because we had not recently backed up hundreds of pictures, etc. I wanted to try to recover, at least enough to be able to back up those files. We decided to run a "Repair" on the Windows installation. and when asked for the Administrator password, we had no idea what it was. Went to Dell website, into their User Forums, and found a "hacking process" for making the Administrator password blank. Did that. Nursed the laptop back to partial life, and got all our files copied to other media. Whew!
Now, the laptop needed to be cleaned up. Since you all helped me so well before, I followed the current instructions on your "Please Read This Before Posting A HijackThis Log" page.

I downloaded and ran ATF Cleaner.

I went through the System Restore instructions.

I ran Ad-Aware, and it found three Critical Items, all of which were noted as "Alexa".

I ran AVG as per your instructions...Nothing Found.

Your next instructions say to run SuperSpyware, but I could not. I was getting "Windows Installer"-related error messages.

OK...Since I backed up all my important pictures, files, etc, I thought a reinstall of Windows would be in order. I put in the distribution CD that came with our computer. I reinstalled Windows using the "Upgrade" option, not the "Advanced" option.

I went through the reinstall, and had to reactivate Windows via phone with MS support. Got it reactivated.

I put in a SP-2 CD, and went through it's install instructions. All appeared well, but during the "Clean Up" phase of the SP2 install, an error appeared that said something like, "SP2 installer encountered a problem, Sorry for the inconvenience, etc."

I ran Ad-Aware again, and it found 1 Critical object...Alexa.

So, here I am. What to do?

My last HJT log from last night is pasted below. And here is some other potentially pertinent info...

We wanted to change from Symantec/Norton anti-virus to the free tool offered by RoadRunner, EZ Anti-virus and Firewall.

Do we need to be careful about which Malware programs we use? Do they all get along? We have quite a selection of tools that either I or my wife has downloaded. Ad-Aware, AVG ( formerly Ewido), SpySweeper, SpyBot S&D, Windows Defender?, Windows firewall?, etc...

Current HJT logfile. ***********************
