When I switch on my computer the monitor fails to light up. If I switch off the power, it starts next time sometimes on the third try. I have had this problem for a month now.

Do you mean it comes on when you switch the monitor off then on again, or when you switch the whole system off and on again??

If it's the former, the monitor has an internal fault or a bad power cable.
If the latter, the VGA lead could be faulty or the graphics controller to which it's attached could have loose connection.
