i installed this drive and get message that i have no decoder that is compatible

That is referring to Nero Showtime or Power DVD

You can get a trial of Nero here, this will also edit and encode files for burning to DVD

A cheaper alternative if all you want to do is play dvd-video, is to download the mpeg2 (dvd-video) plug-in for Windows Media Player then you can watch your DVDs with that since you already have it. A plug-in for WMP is much cheaper than a complete application.
