I keep getting a error pop up that says......
Mcupdate has caused a error in KERNEL32.DLL

I haven't been able to defrag either, so i downloaded a defragger and now i'm getting this error also....

ERROR STARTING PROGRAM
The IOBIT SMARTDEFRAG.EXE file is linked to Missing export KERNEL32.DLL-getfilesizeex

What does this all mean and how can i fix this KERNEL32.DLL
(i do know its part of the operating system, but thats all i know).

Thanks

Hi llwgirl
Please go to Control Panel > add remove programs. Highlight KB 891711.exe cllick on remove
do the same with KB 918547.exe.
Reboot and see what happens.
The 2 files are from Microsoft and we know that they cause problems on some computers.
Do you know how to start your computer in safe mode. If yes then run the windows 98 defrag in safe mode.
Cheers

Thank you for your reply. I went in and removed them but then when it started back up it said something about new stuff on the system and there was a icon on my desktop for networking. That kind of scared me so i went in and did a restore. So far i haven't gotten the error. Hoping it stays that way.

Again , Thank You
Laura

i spoke to soon. its still doing it. I just have a feeling it has something to do with the McAfee service center. Today i went to do the virus scan and McAfee virus scan said there was a missing componate and to re-install. i removed it and download AVG instead. But i'm still using Mcafee firewall. (i'm computed stupid and don't know how to config. a new firewall once downloaded).
I did trace McUpdate down to McAfee service center, Can that be tieing up the KERNEL32 core component??
I can't defrag even in safe mode.
If i'm missing this KERNEL32 core component , then how do i get it back? I don't have the ME disc or windows disc.

Thank you , Laura

Hi Laura
You said you did a system restore. Does this mean you reinstalled those 2 KB files?
Cheers

Mcupdate has caused a error in KERNEL32
mcupdate will close.

But then it happens over and over. I traced Mcupdate to Mcafee service center.

But its the KERNEL 32 component i'm worried about. From what i have been able to find out, that is part of your main system
In one system check area is showed under SOFTWEAR ENVIROMENT. under the Drivers ......
TYPE-------STATE-------STATUS
Kernel--- not availible--- not availible

Under RUNNING TASK , it has...
C:\windows\system\Kernekl32
not availible

One warning i got at one time said that there was a missing export KERNEL32.DLL link

I know less about computers then a 2 yr old...... HELP!

1st step is to get rid of all the Mcafee including Mcafee firewall.
Reboot and see what happens.

Cheers
peterm
ps
This error occurs when a program or application tries to access kernel32.dll's protected memory space. Sometimes the error is caused by one particular program or application, and other times it is provoked by multiple files and applications.

I tried to put in a different firewall, but i don't know how to configer it. so when i download it it was asking me everything that tried to start (msn, explorer, task, etc), where MCafee figured those in already. But i know Mcafee has to go. I just need to find a free firewall to use for now the will configure easy.

You need to remove mcafee firewall before putting a new one on
I would not be to worried about a firewall just yet.
The main thing is to get rid of the error messages 1st. Which means no firewall to start with.
I do not use a firewall on my 98 machine

Ok if you do not use Dr waston and boot the computer do you get any error messages?
We may have to look at upgrading your Video and sound card drivers.
