Is it possible that your CD-R is going?
How old is the PC?

Hi Lindsey_The_Non-Techie_Geek...
Right click on My Computer and choose "Properties". Click the "Hardware" tab and then the "Device Manager" button.
Expand (click +) the DVD/CD-ROM drives section...is your drive listed? Is there a yellow ! or ? displayed next to it?

I did what you said, wannabe1, and the "Device is working properly" When the computer starts up the drive starts to spin and then it quits. The light will stay on for a second or so like it is going to start, but it doesn't.
The laptop is about a year old. Everything else has been working fine, and the drive worked a few days ago cause my stepdad watched a DVD on it.
The CDs also work in another computer we have.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

Go back to Device Manager, right click on the offending drive, choose "Uninstall", and accept the change.
Reboot and see if the drive works after Windows reinstalls it on startup.

I did reinstall it like you suggested. Didn't work. My stepdad is going to take it to his computer department when the holiday is over.
THANKS AGAIN and Happy Holidays.

We've got some more to look at...
Click Start then Run and type regedit...click "Ok"
In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, are UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters listed?

Right click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and choose "Export". Name this file filters and save it to your desktop.
Then right click on LowerFilters and choose "Delete". Accept the change and close registry editor. Close all open windows and log off (Start > Log Off)...then log back on to windows and see if your drive works.

Check the registry and see if the LowerFilters key replaced itself.

Nope it didn't replace itself.

Ok...uninstall the drive in device manager again and reboot.
If that doesn't get you going, we'll look a another registry key.
