Hi! I really need some help. System Restore, Microsoft software (including Internet Explorer), Norton Antivirus, and SuperAntispyware will not work on my computer. Also, just in the last few days, this malware has removed the sound mixer (cannot control computer volume).

IE acts like it is opening, then I get the error message: Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Norton antivirus opens the security center box, then says: Symantec Integrator has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. However, other things Norton, like the One Button Checkup, will work. I can run LiveUpdate and update w/o problem (or seems like it).

SuperAntispyware starts to open then says: SUPERAntiSpyware has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Also, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D both work OK (or seem to).

I have tried to research what this could be and can't find anything with these symptoms. I opened Mozilla Foxfire and ran TrendMicro online scan and it found a spyware program or something, but that was all. I booted w/Norton disk and nothing. AdAware and Spybot S&D cleaned out a little spyware, but that was all.

I've tried to uninstall McAfee AntiSpyware, but cannot.

My computer did an automatic Windows update on Saturday, Nov. 18, but I don't think I had this problem after that. I could be wrong about that. This problem started Sunday evening, Nov. 19.

I followed all the step in the "Read before you post HiJackThis" forum. I was unable to perform the System Restore (won't run), SuperAntiSpyware (won't run, even after reinstall), Panda ActiveScan (won't work w/Firefox & IE won't run), Windows Update (got it downloaded, but says it can't install because I have newer version), or install AVG Antivirus (couldn't uninstall Norton).

Thank you so much for any help you can give me. I am stumped!!! My HiJackThis and AVG (safe mode) reports are below. DUE TO LENGTH of AVG, I will only post a few representative lines. I have attached the file for review of entire results. Again, thank you!

Beth

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall McAfee. You said you are running Norton. Please don't run two anti-viral.

REboot.

Please set your system to show
all hidden files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs and all windows, leaving only HijackThis running. Please disconnect from the internet. Place a check mark against each of the following, making sure you get each one and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Malware Sweeper] C:\Program Files\MalwareSweeper.com\MalwareSweeper\MalSwep.exe
O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: officejet 6100.lnk = ?

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\bin\npjpi142.dll
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {193B17B0-7C9F-4D5B-AEAB-8D3605EFC084} - C:\PROGRA~1\COPERN~1\COPERN~1.EXE

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Hi! :whistling:

I cannot delete McAfee. I have tried all different ways, including control panel, add/delete programs. I cannot delete anything that has to do with viruses or spyware detection or removal. Also, McAfee is just spyware detection, not antivirus. I've used them for years together, but have been trying to get rid of McAfee, as I'm not going to use it anymore. I only keep the one antivirus program, but several spyware ones (apparently, not enough  ).

I'll work on this and post back to you as soon as I am done.

Also, I have found the following processes:
aupdate.exe (associated w/trojan.exfol.process)
msmsgs.exe (associated w/agobot-NI a worm gaobot)
realsched.exe (associated w/lovgate worm)
spoolsv.exe (associated w/ciadoor, baitap-A, and purityscan)
nopdb.exe (associated w/purityscan)
stacsrv.exe (associated w/malware if found in c:windows or c:\windows\system32. I found STACSRV.EXE-28CB38AA.pf in c:\WINNT)

I am still working on these processes, but hope to examine them all.

Also, when I booted this evening, I had this error message for the very first time: This system has recovered from a serious error. When I examined the log, it found the problems to be in c:\docume~1\owner\locals~1\temp\WER223.dir00\mini122506-01.dmp and c:\docume~1\owner\locals~1\temp\WER223.dir00\sysdata.xml

Thank you SO much for replying and helping!!! I will begin on your list and post again when I have results for you.

Thanks again!!!

Hi!

OK...I did all that you said...at least as much as I could. When in Safe Mode, I could not find PowerRegScheduler. So, when I rebooted, I ran Killbox and entered the info. It said the process had been removed by an outside program (I am fairly certain that is how it was phrased). I then ran ATF.

I was also working to find processes that don't belong on the computer. I ran Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and AVG. AD-Aware found BPS Spyware Remover and the files aupdate, mcupdate (2 of them), ssupdate, and a misc update (4 of them). Spybot found a couple of crazy things (listed below), as well as AdRevolver, Advertising.com, Avenue A, Clickbank, DoubleClick, FastClick & MediaPlex. AVG found a number of tracking cookies (I won't list them all), as well as adware VB.

Spybot found the following files and identified them as needing deleted/quarantined: Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.antivirusdisablenotify AND Microsoft.Windows.Security.internetexplorer. It also listed the HKEY registry files where they were located. I deleted these, along with BPS Spyware Remover.

I also found wscntfy.exe running (associated w/KavPersonal90 and Troj/Banker-F2.

OK...on to the HiJackThis log! Thanks again for your help!!!!!!

Please disable Spyware Doctor and Windows Defender before you attempt the next step. You have a lot of anti spyware programs running: windows defender, spyware doctor, AVG, McAfee.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Will you please tell me what we just turned off to fix the Microsoft products? :whistling: Did I have malware or a program conflict? I am still checking to see what all works now. I'm working on it, though. Please explain to me what we just did. I gotta know!

I know we probably aren't completely finished, but I really appreciate your help!!! Thank you so much!

You have a great number of products running that fight each other. We are trying to turn some off so only one will work at a time.

Please decide which item you want to keep:

Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
AVG Spyware

Keep one and go to add/remove programs and uninstall two of the above programs.

Reboot.

Turn off windows defender, AVG Scanner and spyware doctor again. *whichever one you decide to keep)

Go to start>>run and type in the word msconfig

Go to the start-up tab and uncheck anything to do with McAfee

Reboot.

Please have the items disabled again. Run hijack this and make sure you turn off wordwrap.

Put an x next to these items.

O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service (navapsvc) - Symantec

Reboot and run hijack this again and give me a new log. :whistling: Let me know how it's running.

Hi! First, thanks again for your help! My Norton had expired during the time I couldn't get IE to run. I installed a new one today. It installed w/o problems. I did a full scan, but it found nothing.

I did all that you said to do, but there were some odd problems.

I deleted AVG. I had already deleted Spyware Doctor. Defender is the only one of those three still on the computer.

I went into MSCONFIG and checked all that had to do with McAfee.

When I ran HiJackThis, I could not find these:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCUpdateExe] C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\McUpdate.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCAgentExe] C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\McAgent.exe

In O23, I turned off mcdetect.exe, mctskshd.exe, and mcupdmgr.exe. I could not find O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service (navapsvc) - Symantec

When I rebooted and ran HJT again, those McAfee files were still there. I though that perhaps I'd done something wrong, so I did it again. They are still there. I wonder if I'm right in assuming that this is a worm or rootkit that disguises itself as McAfee (I'll be back to researching LOL).

Here is my HJT logfile:

Had a thought and renamed HiJackThis and tried to delete McAfee listings again. It still didn't work.

Ah well...worth a try. :whistling:

It is running really well. Norton installed w/o problems (I hope). I can't get McAfee to disappear. I need to try and burn a CD. The volume control is back on the computer. I need to check a couple of things, but it is running good. Do you think we fixed whatever was wrong? Do you think it was malware? I didn't have all of those programs installed when this problem first started. Most of them were installed in an effort to fix it. I noticed this problem started after a Microsoft update. I figured there must have been a vulnerability after the install. But, so far, so good. What do you think? :whistling:

I think if it's working well, then that's all you need to worry about. :whistling:

I will keep this topic open a few days so you can play around with it and report back if you have any problems.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Thank you so much for your help! Do you have any idea what was wrong (what the infection was)? I will work with the computer over the next couple of days to make certain everything that was wrong is working correctly. Again, thank you for your help. You're great!!! :whistling:

Oh..PS...have any suggestions on how I can delete McAfee? It doesn't work and I cannot delete it. Do you think I should reinstall it, then delete it? It seems like there is a program I can use to do it, but I can't think of what it's called off-hand.

Thanks again!!!
