My onboard sound was damaged during a storm. After installing an aftermarket card my PC displays RUNDLL ERROR: cmicnfg.cpl error.

Don't know if that means you solved your problem or not....

The most obvious solution is to uninstall any cmedia software in add/remove control panel, then drop into device manager and look under sound and game controllers and remove anything there that remains.

Had to go into registry on this problem and find cmaudio run cmicnfg.cpl
and remove it. hklm software/windows/current version/run.....
