My brother has problems, major problems. I have noted his computer running very slow and have done the recommended checks that you list with a number of spyware and virus showing up. A large number were removed using the tools AVG Anti-Spyware, Super Antispyware, Online Panda Activescan and his own Freedom Anitvirus Anti-Spyware package. This still leaves him with problems. The Panda Activescan still shows a number of problems and he gets the Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. problem which when we hit the send or don't send command some of the items in the taskbar disappear. The Error Signature reads:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0003215b

Attached is the Highjack file along with the uninstall info. I have also added the Panda report.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. At times like these I appreciate not have any teenage daughters but I also suspect the parents do not have the best computer practices as well.

Hi

I will need all the info you can provide about the explorer error, unfortunately there are alot of reosons for this. Was there any software installed when this started etc.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

Hi,

Since I have run the AVG Anti-Spyware, SuperAntiSpyware, and Panda Activescan a number of times I thought I should give you the results of Hijack again as well as the other information. Note that both AVG and SuperAntiSpyware have come back clean as well as Vundofix. The Windows Explorer problem occurs every 5 or so minutes if I respond by clicking on the Send Error Report or Don't Send. If I leave it I can do everything I have tried on the PC so far. The error is:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

The Error Siganature is:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0003215b

Would you like to see the Technical information about the error report as well? I can not tell what triggers this error. I do not have to do anything on the PC and it will generate this error. As well as removing some of the icons at the bottom right corner of the Task Bar.

You are right about this being a very tricky problem. I have been spending a lot of time researching this without much success. The only software I can remember installing is the new Internet Explorer 7 and Counter Spy. I have removed Counter Spy since. These were installed just in the last few days.

Anyway here is the result of the Activision Report:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/sidesearch Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Brian\Application Data\Lycos

Here is the new Hijack report:

Hi

Download Findlop by Metallica. Unzip it to your desktop.
Double click findlop.bat. It will open a notepad file.
Copy the content of that file and paste it here in your reply.

Would you like to see the Technical information about the error report as well?

yes I would if you can post it for me

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the white box below into a new text file. Save it as "delete.bat" WITH THE QUOTES and save it on your Desktop.

attrib -s -r -h "CC:\WINDOWS\tasks\AC673B579290AFFF.job"
del /q "C:\WINDOWS\tasks\AC673B579290AFFF.job"
quit

after saving as instructed above, please close notepad. You will now have a file on your desktop called delete.bat. Please double click it and allow it to run

Hi

Lets try to find out if there is a problem with one of the microsoft files

Go to sart >>> run and enter this command

sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. It may ask for the XP cd if there is a problem, insert it if it does

Let me know if this solves the issue, if not we will go to a more aggressive method

Hi,

No luck it wants the CD for SP2. I have the SP1a disk and my brother had updated it to SP2. I did note that it wanted to access the CD for a number of files. Should I uninstall SP2? Any problems with doing this. I have backed up all the personal data that they want to keep. This is looking like a complete reinstall.

No reformat yet :whistling:

Lets try a repair install. You will NOT lose any of your personal data when doing this. You will have to reinstall all the windows critical updates though. I have used it many times with success.

Here is the link for an easy to follow tutorial http://www.geekstogo...s...ic=138&st=0

Please let me know how it goes
