Lost Startup Password

My sister has a gateway laptop. Somehow or another it has a startup password and she has no idea what it is. Is there anyway to recover or bypass the password. It will not load windows or anything else without the password.
I also have a gateway laptop with the Operating System disk and can create disk from mine. If nothing else can I reboot her computer with my OS disk?
