recently i put a generic (i believe) modem ($15.00)(56000) into my computer i have dial up aol 9.0.....once i'm on line i can only stay online for 5-10 mins....then bumped off... with a reason stating that my modem stopped responding...faulty modem????? slow???? different aol 8.0plus????suggestions and or help needed

did you install the new drivers for your modem? more info. on your sytem some slower pc can not run aol 9.0 due to the amount of system resources it uses if you can gave more info on your system we may be able to get it to run ok

These cheaper modems are software based, they use your computers CPU to process the data. While modern computers are fast enough that this has little impact on the systems performance, these modems are not as fast or reliable as a harware based modem.

A hardware based modem contains all the hardware needed to process the data within the modem. If you must use dial-up, spend the additional money on a hardware based modem. You'll likely get faster connection speeds, and definately fewer dropped connections. Expect to spend about $50 on a hardware modem.
