i got a weird thing happening with my external HD. its not reading/showing all the folders in the drive. its showing 2 of the 3 folders, and the 3rd one is the one i need.

i finished d/l'ing a large file to the drive, i thought all went fine. i mean, it went through, so i am guessing it saved fine. i was d/l'ing through a torrent, so if it didnt finish it wouldn't have said "download complete"...so.....

anyway, my computer sometimes gives me a "write error" blah blah blah message for the drive, i dont know why, but sometimes it stops reading the hd or something and i either have to plug it out and back in or refresh and its back to normal. well...this time all went the same, but didnt show all the data. im running xp and its a western digital (caviar SE wd2500jb) drive.

i tried to run an analysis, but it froze. i tried to run a defrag, and it gave me the write error message again so i stopped the defrag.

its showing that im using 20gig out of 232, so the data is there, i just cant see it. anyone know what i need to do to see it again? this was all last night, im gonna try to plug it back in again tonight after work and maybe it all fixes itself, but if not, i need to know what i have to do to get the stuff to show up again.

thank you all for the help!

quick update:

i ran the WD diagnostics, but it told me that it had to stop because of too many errors.

then i ran the chkdsk /r /f and that also couldnt complete the scan. i believe that it stopped on the stage 5 of the scan, not sure how many stages there are though. i kind of passed out while it was on stage 5 and when i woke up an hour or so later it said it couldn't finish.

what can i do to fix the bad sectors or atleast get to the data so i can try to recover it?
