Check if the drivers are correctly installed or if they are enabled.

What make/model is your laptop? How old is it? Running XP? Home or Pro?

To check the drivers as Slikkie suggested, look in the Device Manager (right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager). You'll see a list of all the components for your computer. If the keyboard is having trouble with it's driver, you'll see it listed with a yellow ? or red x on it.

If possible, plug in an external keyboard to confirm whether the problem exists with an external versus the onboard keyboard.

Have you installed any new software/hardware before the problem occured? It may be that the drivers for a certain piece of hardware are colliding with the one of the laptop keyboard.

I doubt if software can stop a keyboard from working. I will search for possible solutions and let you know as soon as I can. Until then, hang in there.

Have you tested with an external keyboard yet? This will tell us if the on-board keyboard has a problem or if it's the kb controller.

Well. The controller if good, the keyboard (or connector) is not.

If your laptop is under warranty, call technical.

If not, you could check on replacing the keyboard, but I've found out of warranty laptop repair and replacement can be cost prohibitive. If you want to go that route, be sure to check in your area for parts dealers.

Hi,

Thanks for this. I've taken it into a local shop and he has repaired it for me - £30 - could have been worse!

Thanks again.
