I recently downloaded a video from the internet but when trying to play it in windows media player I get the error "error downloading codec" I can hear the sound but cannot see the picture. I have tried it in various different programmes such as "real-player" but nothing works.

What do I do?

Please answer in "dummy" language as I'm not too good on copmputers

What version do you have for WMP? See this link for troubleshooting WMP 10. All the instructions are fairly straight-forward.

If this doesn't help, please post back.

It just says it at the bottom of the media player "error downloading codec"

I'm going to say that if you're getting the same error or problem with various other media players, then it's a problem with the file, not your setup.

You could try to download and install the free version of Winamp (winamp.com).

Check the site where you got the video, to see if it has some kind of troubleshooting or codec download for that file.

try this xp codec pack...

http://www.majorgeek...Pack_d4838.html

no joy... try this..

Audio or Video Plays, But Not Both
Issue:
The audio plays, but the video does not, or vice-versa.
Troubleshooting:
As a first step, ensure that your computer has a sound card installed. If your computer has a sound card, the content probably uses a compression codec that is not installed on your computer. To ensure that you have all of the codecs installed on your computer that are currently supported, reinstall Windows Media Player from the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft...smedia/download

Other Cause:
This issue may also occur if there is not enough bandwidth to play both audio and video. You may receive sound, even though the video is not present because audio requires less available bandwidth.
