Hi Jazza,

Make sure you have all the latest drivers, makes sure you have the latest patch installed, try a reinstall of the game, try reducing the graphics options.

Are there any errors in the event logs around the time of the black screen?
Is it just COD that it happens with?
Do a complete uninstall, delete any folders left over, run a registry cleaner such as CCleaner, restart the PC and the install it again.

Done everything but now when I try running the game from the cd it says "Executable 'E:\setup\rsrc\cod2.exe' had the following unrecoverable error: Couldn't find library msvcr80.dll (required by C:\progra~1\windows~4\MPShHook.dll)"
then it will quit the game. I did a Windows file check thingy. Sorry don;t know the name of it or the process. I was reading a different topic and someone said to check your system files so i did it just in case.

But, If i double click on what I want it works. Strange

Run system file checker.

Put your XP CD your CD/DVD drive and follow the instructions below.

Start > Run > cmd then type

sfc /scannow (note the space)

let this run untill you get a message saying it is complete.

sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

When A PC starts overheating it crashes/freezes/slowsdown but it doesn't display file errors.

Download Driver Cleaner, uninstall your drivers, run driver cleaner and install the latest ATI drivers. (Read the Driver Cleaner readme file for details).

Have you tried using older drivers?
Are you using the ATI drivers or are you using modified third party drivers (Omega drivers etc)?
Did you install the patch?
Does DirectX Diagnostics show any problems?

no other drivers but the ATI ones from there websites. Someone said to use DirectX 7 instead of 9, it worked for most of the game then it froze and did it again.

It's OK you can now close this topic Problem solved by a mysteries system restore to a date that it didn't work. Lol. I system restored it to get my computer working again because ATI Catalyst Control Centre reckoned I didn't have a driver or my graphic isn't working properly. So I system restored it to a date I know my graphics was working properly. And I thought I would Cod2 another try. And it worked. It froze once but from then on no black screen, no freezing. Thanks For All The Help Zeus. Very Much Appreciated.
