although when i click on the cell, it shows that there should be a formula, it just does not calculate it, did anyone ever encounter this problem? Does anyone know how to fix this?

It sounds like manual calculation is turned on. In your spreadsheet, if you press the F9 key, do your calculations happen? If so, go to Tools, Options, Calculation tab, and check Automatic (this will uncheck Manual).

Did that do it? If not, please confirm your version of Excel. Is it completely up-to-date with Microsoft updates?

thanks so much for your quick reply! i did try to press the F9 key and it worked, do you know how to make it work without pressing the F9 key? It just worked earlier today. Please advise.

Check the Calculation tab (Tools, Options). The top of that tab has a place for Automatic (to the left) or Manual (to the rigth). Choose Automatic. Save the worksheet, close Excel, then open everything back up.
